At the Horton house, JJ has put on a record, one of Jack's favourites. Jennifer is glad, and an affected Abby walks in. Jennifer's glad to have a baby in the house. The bell rings, it's Julie and Doug with Claire. JJ talks about "an army of Hortons and a bunch of Horton wannabes" and worries it's too much for Abby.

Belle and Chad are having drinks at Club TBD, joking about Chad not doing actual work, and discussing Shawn-D and Belle's breakup, her desire to have Claire near family. She cheated, though they were both at fault. She's willing to deal with the "boatload of judgment" that accompanies Claire's being around her family. They discuss whether or not Chad's word as a DiMera is worth anything and whether or not he was complicit in Marlena's attack. She and Shawn-D need time apart, and Marlena needs Belle right now...because, Chad asserts, of what Sami did to Stefano. Belle's not biting, Chad lays it on thick about not feeling sorry for Stefano, knows he's not sulking, but plotting revenge. Chad vows to protect Belle, whom he declares his lawyer and his friend. He clasps her hand as Abby enters.

In the Square, Victor wants Maggie to hand out some cheques, Maggie says that's not personal. They spy Lucas, Victor says this must be hell for him. Maggie goes to talk to him, Victor is worried about being with the Hortons too long. Maggie talks to Lucas, who is trying to stay positive, but has seen a present he had planned to buy Will (a first edition Faulkner) this year. Talks about finding out Will was his son, taking him to Gran for the first time, bringing him to Christmas. He hopes Will's in a better place, but isn't ready to face the family, hang Will's ornament.

At the townhouse, John stops Marlena as she enters the room, has secretly hung mistletoe. They kiss; Marlena laughs, but is worried about Lucas missing them at the party. The Hortons have had some terrible losses, need people who love them around. John flashes back to his talk with Eduardo, and tells Doc he doesn't think that's a good idea. John levels with her, says there's danger if they go to the Hortons'. After the break, John has filled her in, as a flummoxed Marlena has learned that Winterthorne was an assassin-recruitment cover, and that John's digging into his past has upset "the Powers that Be" and put them in danger. They talk about Eduardo's warning, John feels Eduardo's on the level, wants out of the life, and is trying to stop the hit. John is sure Eduardo will do what it takes to get the hit stopped. Marlena is upset that she didn't get to go the Horton Christmas Eve because of the hit on John. (She still has the present she was carrying on her lap, even though in other parts of Salem, hours have passed.) She doesn't want to live behind closed doors. John agrees, but thinks it's best for tonight. Marlena realises there are worse things than spending the evening at home with the man you love. "It's a wonderful life," John quips, as Marlena cuddles up to him.

Eduardo is wandering the foggy Square, Kate spies him and enters pursuit. Later, she has followed him to a table, where Eduardo is trying to order Scotch. Kate snarks that champagne is more festive, then backtracks a bit, talks about the losses they've suffered. Kate's not backing down, not taking Eduardo's out, gets invited to sit down. Eduardo wonders why she's not with her family, she says "they're busy tonight, I'll see them tomorrow." She flirts with him, he informs her that he's leaving on an important business trip tomorrow. Kate gives him a key card to the "Skyward Club," a new hotspot in Titan Towers, where the Penthouse Grille used to be. He thanks her, she says he needs to be rubbing elbows with the power elite. Eduardo's not sure he belongs in that class, but she is; she kisses him. Eduardo thanks her, laments he didn't know he'd be spending Christmas Eve with "someone so remarkable."

At the Brady house, Chase and Ciara are playing on their phones/iPads, Hope wants them to get ready to go to Gran's, Ciara is unenthused. Hope reminds them of the importance of Christmas, family; she's lucky to have them both in her life.

Ciara, Chase, and Hope have arrived at the Horton house, Doug jokes as he lets them in. (Chase greets Doug, "Hello, sir.") Ciara goes to get donuts, Hope tells Doug about Ciara's reluctance to come. Later, Lucas arrives with Maggie, they hug Jen. Roman arrives before Jen closes the door, he needs to talk to Abby. Abby gives Jen the baby monitor, goes outside, and Roman asks her about her vandalism in the Square. She just wants to fix it, doesn't want to talk. Later, Abby and Roman are in the Square, apparently having smoothed things over. Roman offers to walk her home, but she's okay walking by herself. She thanks him, he wishes her a Merry Christmas with her little boy.

Lucas has stepped outside to look at a text from Sami. It's a picture from Allie that says, "Will may be in heaven, but you still have me. I love you, Daddy." He's holding back tears. Inside, Doug announces it's time, scoots Claire, Chase, and Ciara out of the living room. By the tree, Victor assures Hope that she and Ciara are safe, he's got an army of men trying to find out the truth about who set her up, and who did this to Bo.

Abby comes up to Chad and Belle, talks about how he was planning a future for them (Abby, Chad, and Thomas) just 24 hours ago, Chad is annoyed (but cold), tries to shoo her away. Abby rails, blames Stefano, André, etc. She sees that Chad is unaffected as she tries to figure out what's going on with him, this isn't like him, etc. Abby stalks off, leaving Chad and Belle staring at each other.

Julie laments the sad year the Hortons have had, Doug steps up, says, "This year, yes...this year we need this night more than ever. It's been a bumpy road. We've all been hit hard. We know we can't bring back those people we've lost. But decorating this tree is our way to celebrate our family. So tonight we stop and we remember who we are, where we came from. We tell all the stories. It's important that we continue to do this, all the Days of our Lives." He adds that he wants Abby and JJ to carry on this tradition, even if they're not in this house. JJ speaks up on behalf of him and the "unusually" quiet Abby, and accepts.

Later, Julie announces that it's time for the ornaments, with many new ones. Julie and Maggie begged, baked, and bribed to get "Mr Early" to finish Thomas' ornament on time. Abby thanks them. Hope talks about Gran and Grampa talking about how family means more than people with common ancestors. People who are "designated Hortons" who came into the family through love. Gets an ornament from the box, and has Ciara give it to the newest "designated Horton." She takes it to Chase, who doesn't know what to say. He gets a lot of hugs.

Ornament hanging: Hope hangs Bo's ornament, kisses her hand and touches the ornament. Zack's is on the tree; Ciara hangs hers, hugs Hope Chase hangs his; Claire hangs her ornament. Doug and Julie's are hung, as Julie hangs Addie's. Doug embraces her. Maggie hangs Janice's ornament next to Sarah's; Lucas hangs Will's next to Sonny's. (Jennifer's is on the tree, as well as Daniel, Parker, and Melanie.) Victor hangs his ornament below Maggie's. The montage then reverses time, as we see family members removing already-hung ornaments from their boxes, and we watch Jennifer hang her ornament. Lucas hangs Allie's high, then his own right by Will's. Maggie hangs hers and Mickey's (that is in the right order). Jennifer stands on a chair and hangs Tom and Alice's ornaments. Fade out on Tom and Alice's ornaments.

Later, Belle has stormed out, but Chad catches up with her in the bushy clearing. Abby is clearly not as "done" with Chad as Chad would like. Belle thinks that Chad's amusing, he has good taste in wine, but Abby confirmed everything she already knew: she has to be careful with him.

Julie thanks Doug for what he said to the kids, Alice would have loved it. They kiss. JJ plays guitar, and he and Claire sing a rockabilly version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Then an instrumental version plays as we see Eduardo and Kate stargazing, Belle come home to John & Marlena, Chad alone in DiManse, and Abby crying as she rocks Thomas. Back to the Hortons, where Claire and JJ are finishing up their song to modest applause. And again, up the tree to Tom & Alice's ornaments, and fade out.

Thank you Jason, I was so glad there was so much music today, Christmas music. The record that JJ plays at the beginning is The First Noel, & we do have the clip of the ornament hanging with Kelly Moneymaker singing if I could have one wish. I think the episode was done well, a good portion of time (not 3 seconds as in the past) devoted to the ornament hanging, I am glad John told Marlena about the proposed hit on him, and that Belle came home in time to join her parents on the sofa, though why Marlena would not let go of that gift she had in her hands is beyond me. LOL

Thank you Jason...
Am surprised Kate was just wandering around the Square on Christmas Eve. I did like a couple different references to "It's A Wonderful Life" (which is on NBC tonight, by the way)LOL
And thank you Jason for the explanation of what kind of version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen that JJ was singing. (Sorry, I just dislike when Christmas music is not sung/played the way it was written - old fashioned me, !)
Lucas was very upset, nearly breaking down when he talked to Maggie about The Sound & the Fury book he was going to give Will. Really good job on his part today. Wish the show gave him more to do.

thank you again., Jason........Have a good day and evening all...Merry Christmas to all who will be celebrating. Am off to church, hopefully, if the roads are plowed.

Let's give Bryan Dattilo an Emmy® nod for today's work as Lucas. His scenes were very real and powerful.

I feel like there were some missed moments (I would have liked to have seen a scene with Maggie or Julie removing/destroying an ornament they ordered for Ben, who until a few weeks ago Salem time was to be a Horton-in-law) but overall it was nice and even. And I did enjoy, even if it was timewarped a bit, the longer ornament scene, and the "designated Horton" talk.

Truly...I actually teared up a little bit when Chase got his ornament. And of course I could barely write Lucas's scenes.

I do wonder why Melanie/Daniel/Parker were on the tree, if they weren't going to be there at all. I don't want to offend Doug or Hope, but I still don't like those "Horton wannabes." In my world we have both "Horton wannabes" and "designated Hortons." LOL

Loved the John/Marlena scenes and actually liked Eduardo and Kate, too. Though I could do without Kate, really.

Chad and Belle...not so much. I found it creepy and just wanted it to end. And when they talked about losing loved ones with so much focus on Abby/JJ and Hope/Ciara, and nary a mention (in the group scenes) of Lucas's loss, it irked me. Also Doug's "passing the torch" to JJ and Abby, of all Hortons...just didn't feel right to me.

That said, the writers/directors showed they know what's important by having several close-ups and fade-outs on Tom & Alice's ornaments. Let's hope this trend continues.

The traditional Horton tree ceremony was nicely done, which is a good thing because several attendees were in dire need of Christmas cheer. Perhaps most in need of some family support was poor Lucas who simply never catches a break. Hopefully, the grinch writers will give him an uplifting story line in 2016. Speaking of grinches, there was Victor with his line: " personal is overrated." If he could, he'd probably turn John's mistletoe into mulch for the Kiriaskis gardens. As for John himself, when will his dark and dirty past stop popping up to cause the long-suffering Marlena more misery and anxiety?? Another low note was Roman, fresh from letting crazy Ava roam free, showing up at the Horton home on Christmas Eve to bother Abigail about her vandalism even though the charges had already been dropped. Finally, JJ's choice of songs was most appropriate -- "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," with it's "save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray." Satan's power is usually very evident in Salem and the people who live there are very likely to go astray.

A great episode today but with some holes. I felt like I missed a couple of episodes and I haven't. Didn't yesterday end with a cliffhanger with Steve and Ava? And when did Belle and Chad get so cozy?

When Roman was talking to Abby about HER family's losses, I wanted to yell at the tv that Bo and Will are HIS family too!!

Loved all the time devoted to the Hortons and the ornament ceremony, even if it was poorly edited. I do think Arianna should have come with Lucas and that Thomas should have been in at least 1 scene with everyone cooing over him. He wasn't even a discussion topic aside from Jen's comment. Baby Thomas not Doll Baby Thomas. I think they purposely kept those scenes limited to blood Hortons with a few exceptions but I'm glad it was explained why Belle, John and Marlena were not there. I agree that Daniel and spawn shouldn't be on the tree. The closeup of Janice was interesting. Is it foreshadowing?

John and Marlena were adorable and I loved her hair and dress. No way does she look almost 70!!! Loved that Belle joined them at the end. It would have been even better had Brady and Tate been there as well or at least Brady.

So the Penthouse Grill now has a new name? Will we see a new set? Other than that, no interest in Kate and Eduardo. Please put her back with Roman.

Loved that Hope finally paid attention to Chase but I would have also liked to have seen her pay attention to her granddaughter. Not one hug or conversation between the 2. She did smile at the end when Claire started singing but that was it.

Thanks Jason.

A difficult episode to watch for my own personal reasons.

Interesting what JJ said about the ornaments, Hortons and Horton wannabes.
We been discussing why people have an ornament in another topic.

I can't believe it the Salem PD solved a case in record time. I'm sure having
cameras on the square helped a lot in the "Who Broke the Window this
Time on the Horton Square?" Another Horton did. Abby is lucky Roman
helped out and the owner dropped the charges.

Will we get to see the Skyward Club since it was mentioned?

Nice to see John and Marlena in the townhouse today.

Poor Lucas. He lost Will and who knows when he'll see Allie again.

i thought it odd that Doug singled out Abby & JJ (but guess it was because they live in the Horton house.....but since he mentioned "even if you live elsewhere", then Ciara, Claire, Lucas should all have been included as well in his comments. However, I did like ALL that he said.
I could have done without Kate stalking Eduardo, and since when does one need a special card to enter a club? I think we need Maggie's restaurant back as a "nice place" to go have dinner. With a big sign saying management has a right to refuse service, and then refuse to serve kate. A big MEOW from me there. Sorry.

I hope we get to see more "feeling" from Ciara, both in tone and in expressions. And did I miss something........ANYONE asking Claire about her mom? or How her dad was doing?

I thought it was strange Hope reached out her hand and JJ came up next to her.
I thought she wanted Ciara there.

I just think it's silly that apparently Allie is still a young child. All these other kids have been aged. Sami's kids can't stay young.
I had the same thought...confirmation she's still a child. Then again...some teens these days...they don't write so good-like!!! LOL

........ and since when does one need a special card to enter a club?

Most private social clubs today have key cards to get in the door instead of the bartender having to buzz members in when they ring the "doorbell". You use the key card to open the door the same way that you use a hotel key card to get in your room. I have a key card for the local German home when I go for dinner with my friends or to hear a band. (Yes, they let an Irish Italian be a member.)

So then then these places are not open to the Public? And if you are a member there is a fee? Like the private country clubs/golf clubs?? Too bad then, because I liked the Penthouse Grill. I still think Days needs a really nice place to go to dinner. Like Maggie's place used to be. Then again, Days decided the bars like Club TBD were better these days, I guess.

I'll be glad as long as we see people eating somewhere besides the Pub, TBD, or the Square!! (Especially in winter!!!)

I do wonder though why they didn't just resurrect the Penthouse Grille? I don't think locations work like characters in terms of royalties, but who knows?

I think the name of the new club is stupid, too, if it's not in an airport, LOL.

So then then these places are not open to the Public? And if you are a member there is a fee? Like the private country clubs/golf clubs??

That is correct.
1. There is a membership fee. Unlike country clubs, most of the ethnic social clubs....German, Italian, Slovak, Croation, etc......have very low fees from $10 to $30 per year.
2. The clubs are not open to the public. A non-member guest can only get in when with a member.
3. A member MUST never give their key card to anyone else to use. (Yep, Kate would be kicked out.)
4. In Pennsylvania, state law states that guests may purchase food, but not alcohol. The member must order and pay for alcoholic beverages. (No law against the guest handing money to their host member though).
5. When the host member leaves the club, their guest must also leave.
