Questions about sets.

Just curious if anyone knows the answer or perhaps Jason47 could provide some insight into this.

Why are sets like the old police station, the piers, homes, etc from Days of our Lives not used anymore? I'm not sure if it is or isn't budgets but to me these sets would probably be in storage and/or paid for so why aren't they used anymore?

I have the book of pictures that Days put out a couple years ago. You are right Muzzaman, from all the pics of the "stored stuff" Days really does have tons and tons of sets and decorations for them. Shelves full. Clothes, jewelry, shoes, rings. glassware, linens, draperies, dishes, walls, doors, windows, vases, flowers, paintings, candles, sconces, tables, chairs, etc. etc. On the front of the book is a pic of the Bo/Hope Brady livingroom, showing a doorway, and beyond that, a dining room, table, chandelier, etc. etc. I have never ever seen that dining room, but perhaps someone remembers doing so. I have shown and asked a few long time Days watchers, Nope, never.

Now they MAY have sold off some items, that is possible. But I do know that a lot of crew has been laid off, and what matters is time to put a set up, take it down. (I did not see any "pier" pics in the book, but will look again. lol) With fewer crew, this is why they will use a set for long periods of time. Like currently it is Club TBD, Pub, and of course The square, which is never taken down. With fewer sets, they don't have to worry about decorations either for holidays or seasons, like they used to do with the apartment and house doors...wreaths, etc.

but, Jason47 would probably have more insight on this than I do.

I'm sure there's still a lot in storage. They update the Police Station set once a decade or so. The first one when I started watching was the Abe's Office/Outer Office one, all connected and split by Abe's door. Then there was a newer version where it was Bo/Roman's Office to the left.

Then they stopped using the office and mainly used the Detective Area with the Interrogation Room. Then they stopped using any police station for awhile (just Hope's small office), but now that they show the Courtroom sometimes (which doubles for the Police Station), that's probably the main reason why they use this current configuration, since it can be quickly changed from the Police Station to Courtroom when needed.

As Poirot mentioned, they now keep some sets up constantly, such as Horton Town Square, the Horton House, Brady Pub, the DiMera Mansion, Daniel's Apartment, etc... when in the "old days" prior to 2009, when the new budget kicked in, they used to tape one full episode a day, and build (and take down) every set overnight.

It's much more cost effective now to keep the big ones up for long stretches of time and then build the smaller ones which are used less frequently or just for a one-time appearance (Cardinal's Office, Plane, etc...) on a nightly basis.
