Question about the Spectator Facebook page...

Does the FB page divert attention from, or towards the Salemspectator site proper?

  • I find that I'm spending much more time reading the FB page than posting here.

Hi guys,

So... we've been "live" for a couple of weeks now with the Salem Spectator Facebook page and I find myself curious as to how you guys feel about it so far. Specifically, I'm wondering whether the Facebook page is causing you to spend more time on Facebook, or more time here when it comes to discussing our favorite obsession...

If "other", please leave your comment as a reply?

Thanks,

Wayne

No, I don't think it is anti-social. I know people who won't even use their real names on Facebook for that reason. They find their trusted friends and relatives, let them know who they are, but still don't use their real last name. And then there are those who ONLY friend their family. I have had two relatives whose Facebook accounts were hacked, so people are cautious. People can come and just look, read, Spectator page.

We have a lot of "readers" on this site, who are not members. And probably the same goes there on Facebook.

I've had my Facebook account hacked from somewhere in the Middle East, no less! It took me a long time to attempt anything on Facebook again. I've been afraid after posting a couple of things on there. Now I'm paranoid, lol! Nothing personal, Wayne.

I'm with kt. Some Spectator friends are also friends in real life. Yes, we are friends on Facebook, email, text, and call. Others here are Donut friends whom I've come to care a great deal about.

On the other hand, the vast majority of the thousands of Spectator members and those on Facebook do not need to know my last name, where I live, etc. That is not being anti-social. It is being prudent in a world that is full of identity theft, hijacking, and cyber stalking. Being cyber stalked was a horrible ordeal.

To be fair, I thought the idea of having the Facebook page was to draw new readers for the site? If that is the case, then it really shouldn't matter if folks from here are on there or not.

I personally don't mind posting on the page. I post on other Days related pages as well. Even though my name is visible, the rest of my Facebook account is not unless it's something public I've posted for my business.

I also think the content on Facebook should be different from the stuff posted here. I like the question posts and general comments but I don't think we should copy posts from the Daily Threads onto Facebook. Spoilers yes but not daily comments about the show. Facebook should be a forum for new comments and as people start commenting and getting excited, they'll naturally want to check out the site. It does take time though.

I don't use my real name on Facebook, but I don't have the time to
go to all the like pages I have. I don't even take the time to read my
friends Facebook pages everyday. Maybe on the weekend, I read
the highlights that pop up.

Sorry if the joke -- and the smiley face -- went unnoticed... :)

I have a dear friend who was so scared and paranoid of facebook that he spent like his first year there using the name of a (apparently) famous -- albeit long-dead -- scuba diver no one had heard of. It was only when his real friends refused to "friend" him on FB that he finally got over it. He's still touchy about everything there, and it's funny for his friends to watch him react to everything, but hey, I'm just saying that I get the paranoia, even if I don't share it.

Working where I do, I sadly realize that with or without Facebook -- or even by-in-large, the Internet -- there's simply no such thing as personal privacy any more.

It is. The core goal -- at least my goal -- is to try and reach people that wouldn't necessarily have found us otherwise. More visitors. More members. More members, more participation. As Cartman might say, "Step 3... Success!"

My only concern is the people here [mostly the younger] who're more FB-centric might float off in the opposite direction, preferring to participate there instead, which is contrary to the hopes of the page..

Didn't know there was a Facebook page. I might check it out.

A few people here know my first name, not sure if you know my last...At first I thought it may be harmless...but since my real name is used on Facebook, I'm not sure. I will give it some thought - but I sure Love it here...so this is still my DAYS home. Even though I don't visit as often as I used to. Busy with school and all that.

I like the anonymity of this board, and like the option of knowing someone more personally by choice, rather than by facebook stalking. :) And since Days is my "guilty pleasure," I really only talk about watching it here. I suppose that is sad, but we all have secrets, right?!? At least this is about as bad as it gets for me... I'm a pretty boring person! LOL!

I'm slow. I knew from the posts here that the Facebook page was up and running, but I just liked it a few minutes ago when I saw this post title. I spend more time total on Facebook (in general) than I do here, but I think I'd probably post more here than on the SS Facebook page. As long as I hit "like" on a few of the posts on there, it should start showing up in my newsfeed and I'm sure I'll interact more then.

For me, the privacy aspect I would worry about is whether my comments or likes on the Facebook page would show up on the Facebook "ticker" thing on the desktop or in my friend's newsfeed as I sometimes see their comments on public posts in my newsfeed. It's the anonymity thing in reverse I guess; I'd rather my Facebook friends not link me back to the Salem Spectator site and my username here.

I don't spend a whole lot of time online in general lately, but I've only seen two posts from the Spectator Facebook pop up on my feed. That's what I do not care for regarding Facebook... Stuff shows up late, sometimes not at all. I'd rather just come check in here.

I have a Facebook page... but I spend more time here....

Edit.. wow... lost a bunch of stuff.... weird computer.... anyway... my company keeps an eye on Facebook and how often their staff logs on and how long we stay on Facebook and if it's mobile or web... so I pretty much only log on at night... not during my lunch hour... that I sit at my desk eating my brown bag meal... wishing it were something wonderful and exotic and not pb&j... taking calls and answering client questions....
