Baby Nathan is a friend's baby. He was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left side of the heart does not form correctly.

He has had 1 surgery at less than 1 week old and has at least 2 more to go.

From his Mom: For all that have been following and keeping us in your prayers. Nathan has survived his first of three heart surgeries today. The doctors and nurses said he did very well. He has a long road to recovery and will be closely monitored the next few days, but we are thankful for the turn out and for all the support!! Thank you for the operating team here!!

Baby Nathan on his birth day.
I know you all know what to do. Thanks

Tell your friend that there are great support networks out there for HLHS and other heart defects. The Children's Heart Foundation and Mended Little Hearts are 2 terrific ones. I also know several adults with this defect so I know medical technology has come a long way.

I will keep Nathan in my thoughts and prayers.

What a sweet little guy- I will keep him in his prayers.

My husband's side of the family has a history of heart defects, many have had surgeries as babies.

Our oldest (the sweet brunette in my avatar) has a heart defect - but it is not as serious and they decided not to do the surgery. She still has a hole in her heart, and blood gets through where it shouldn't...but miraculously, her heart beat is normal (just with a murmer). Doctors were baffled because of the size of the hole should cause a skip. Because of her normal heart beat, her cardiologist made the decision to simply monitor without surgery. She visits every year around her birthday. This year, he wants to hook her up to all the machines that monitored her as a newborn and see if there's any change. they did this 3 years ago and there was no change.
I'm anxious and hopeful the hole heals up on it's own. :) But her cardiologist, Dr. Malpass is one of the best in the country. I know she's in good hands. He says the moment anyone hears her heart skip a beat, they would schedule surgery and fix the hole immediately. We have not had to do that, thank goodness. I'm so afraid of that- I can only imagine the worry these parents feel when sweet Nathan is in surgery. We will all pray for him.

Dr. Malpass even took a picture of her heart once at an angle which made the walls between the 4 parts look like a cross, and he gave her the picture and told her "You're going to be ok because Jesus is in your heart. See? There's his cross, right there!".... yeah, this momma was all teary eyed in the corner. I still tear up thinking about it. It had been a bad day. You see, we wanted to get life insurance for her. We started looking when she was born. At first, no one would accept her because of the severity of the heart defect. I had just argued with an insurance company that morning, and at her appointment, Dr. Malpass did that. :)

Sweet Nathan, everything will be ok- because you have Jesus in your heart! love- DaysLady

P.S. though it took us 3 1/2 years, my daughter now has life insurance! Hers is a little bit more expensive than others, but it's not that bad. :) I'm thankful someone believed in her enough to accept us. *shout out to State Farm! haha.

Nathan is a great name for baby boys in this Chapel room, and if this beautiful baby shines like our pride and joy Nathan, then the name is sooooo wonderful. God is there for his mother, and father, and His loving and healing hand is on the top of the head of this sweet little guy. We will send the prayers, and the parents can be blessed by the knowledge that He is there for them. Eyes to the Skies, and allow Him to fill them with the warmth of the knowing He is near, and watching over this handsome little cherub. He just moved to the top of my prayer list. I believe God is very near.

Just a couple of words for Nathan. When I was first looking at this thread, I was taken so by the picture of this lovely little baby. He looked for all the world like what is stated so eloquently in the Bible. "And they wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in the..." Crib. May God hold him close to his chest, and allow the healing hands fold around that beautiful little darling, that He made, and allow the cherub grow strong and healthy with the love and protection of our Father in heaven.

The name Nathan means gift from God. That is my son's name and he is strong and healthy after his rocky start. We are sending prayers and lots of hugs for this baby Nathan too. God will watch over him everyday.

With The Easter Season upon us, I come in to make sure the precious little bundles from heaven are safe, and of course, each one of them progressing. I am so pleased that he, Little Nathan is doing so well, and that there is one more little bit of information I have for him...."Little Boy from Heaven," and sent to special parents by God Himself, I have this one more message, God does not make anything but the very finest of little troopers, and it means so much to have you progress, and grow, and it won't be long and you will be sitting, and then standing, and then there is no stopping you. God only makes Quality Cherubs, and you little one will be in there with the finest... God loves you Little Darlin. So all you have to do is sleep, eat, smile, gurgle, and have that little sweet gurgle that we all love... Trust in God and He will always be there for you.... Just Look Up....

I am so thankful little Nathen is where he should be, in the hospital, but more than that. He is in the Hands of our Lord and Master... How I pray He guides and directs the medical staff, and all "Hands on " Persons, and may he grow in health, and strength. He is one great looking little cherub, and I know the staff will do all that can be done, my dear friend Mys t, Right now the storm clouds are rolling, Nathen is in great Hands...He will always be there for Nathen. May God Bless you and the rest of the family...
