or whenever you get here. Piping hot coffee, teapot is full, the buffet is overflowing. Dawn is breaking, the sky has an orangy glow, fading into a very pale yellow and then blue. Almost like half a rainbow. We have had a warming trend here, with temps in the upper 30s..more of the same today. Will be getting into the shower, and off to church. My hair has gotten so dry, I don't know what to do anymore, so since I have to run into town lst thing in the a.m. gonna try for a haircut. Which I need, and perhaps it will help.
    Enjoy the day, folks.

Good morning everyone. I have lots of cleaning to do today, but I also want to get my taxes finished. Choices, choices.

I don't feel like cooking today so a small quarter boneless ham (low sodium) is going in one crockpot, and scalloped potatoes in another. Then the vegetable (either green beans or peas) will go in the microwave.

Thank you for breakfast, Poirot. It looks delicious.
I understand completely about needing a hair cut. I was trying to let my hair grow in a little from being super short. When it started touching my collar and was over my ears, I couldn't stand it. I went in last Sunday, and told them to cut it all off again. It turned out that the girls had a bet going on how long I'd last with just little trims. They know me very well. LOL

Breakfast buffet looks delish! We're headed to church, then a birthday party, then 4-H, then the Superbowl! Busy day for a "day of rest". :)

Good morning. Getting ready for the big game (and commercials) tonight. Going to have some hot wings and lots of snack food for supper, so no major cooking tonight on my part. It turned chilly on us with highs in the 40s and a north wind. Annabelle stayed up late last night playing a Disney Princess game on the Wii. Well, Ava's making her way over to me, so I guess she wants some attention. :) Have a great day everyone!

Good morning all. Fudd, you do have a busy day lined up! Sounds like a good change from work though. Enjoy.

Shirley, I would never have thought of cooking a ham in a crockpot, but then I never caught on to cooking in a crockpot, and don't cook much by any method these days. Sounds like you really have short hair, like my sister. That's funny how the girls at the beauty shop were betting on you.

Barb, that breakfast does look yummy! And your sunrise sounded beautiful. It must seem strange for you to be having "warm" weather this time of year. If you find out what to do about that dry hair, let me know. Mine makes me think of freshly picked cotton, only limp as cornsilk. I kept mine short (not as short as Shirley's though) for years and lately have tried letting it grow out. Nothing works!

Our poor cows were wandering around all night, bawling and looking for their "babies" that were sent off to the sale yesterday. Those babies probably averaged 500 pounds, some more than that. More like late teens than babies!

Hope everyone has a good day. Looks like we'll be in the 50s* all week, which is our average for this time of year.~~~~~~~Hi, Rocky, didn't see you. It's cold and cloudy here right now, at 32*, and windy, of course. Hope you enjoy the wings and other snacks and the game. What time does it begin?

@ Fudd - Your family sure is busy. Have fun at all of your doings today.

@ Rocky - I'm coming to your house for all of the snacks later.

@ OC - Can you sleep through the cows "cryng", or are you used to it?
Ham in a crockpot is super easy, and using the crockpot is less expensive than using the gas oven. I just add a little pepsi or coke (the cherry versions are good in this too), brown sugar, and a dab of mustard. The ham takes about 2 hours on high, and is delicious. Scalloped potatoes are super easy........sliced potatoes, diced onions, a can of mushroom soup, and a cup of milk......two hours in the crockpot on high.

Bat with each wing caught in a mousetrap ....a white one and a black one. He chewed the heck out of the white one.

    bat3.jpg

Jim holding the bat as he tried to get me to touch it. NO WAY! I got all girly on him. Nasty fangs!!!

    bat1.jpg

Jim put the bat on the solar light near my porch. I made him move it to the big tree stump (left from the tree that was cut down in November) on the side of the house.

Oh, gosh, I go hysterical at bats in the house. How come he did not just throw it in the trash. Please do not tell me it was still alive?! I once woke up to a bat flying around the bedroom (my very first experience) and no bedside lamp. I pulled the comforter up over my face and it LANDED ON MY FACE. (well, the blanket was protecting me). I screamed bloody murder, jumped up with the entire comforter over me (if it had been white, good Halloween ghost), got the light on. It flew out to the living room, flying round and round. I was absolutely sobbing (home alone), got the broom, no luck trying to hit it. It flew into a bedroom, I slammed that door shut, stuffed a throw rug under the door, and locked myself out on the sun porch, which has a very tight fitting door. Til morning. A cousin was coming over, and I cannot begin to tell you how happy I was to see him. The bat was behind the window curtain, he could see the outline, and took care of things.
You were brave, squirrelly, cuz I would have left the house. I am lucky I don't get cardiac arrest. It has happened a few times since. Ughhhhh. Those are ugly, nasty things. Off to church...later folks.

Oh my goodness, y'all....This bat stuff is too much for me. It was horrifying enough to look at those pictures of the freaky thing, then I was all tensed up like watching a horror movie (which I NEVER watch anymore) while reading Barb's story of her encounter. Of course you have a talent for telling things in a funny way, Barb, and it would have truly been funny if the creature had been a mouse or almost anything besides a bat. But I would feel like the devil himself was after me if I got a bat in my house, let alone in my bed!! There probably are some around here. A friend across the river once got one in her bedroom. But I just hope I never, ever see one! Shirley, still, thanks for posting the pictures. Guess I needed something to get my blood flowing this morning. You said Jim thought the bat's wings were broken so I'm curious as to whether it was still on the tree stump the next day. Even if it wasn't, you'd have no way to know whether it managed to fly away or whether some other critter ate it. I know, gross thought, but really, animals ARE gross, as much as we like most of them.

Shirley, I'm kind of used to cows bawling day or night because even under ordinary circumstances they routinely get separated from their calves, then go around calling for them, though usually just one now and then. I only heard a couple of them last night but hubby said several were on the other side of the house bawling. But we just now got back from feeding them and they all came up and were okay so it's just a matter of a couple of days for their full bags to go down and then they'll forget they ever had a calf.

OC, the TV coverage of the game starts at 5, but with all the to-do, kickoff won't be until 5:30 or later I bet. Snacks will be out starting at 3 or so, so RS--or anyone else--can come grab some snacks.

I so would have freaked out over a bat too. Oh, and hubby told me today that we need to be on the lookout for scorpions again. He was in the bathroom and one nearly fell into his lap from the light fixture. Yeah, there's so many bad jokes I can say there, but I'll refrain. Recessed lighting is nice, but all kinds of bugs love those kinds of places.

Thanks, Rocky. Not that I will be watching but I was just curious about when everybody else would be. Now I've noticed that Channel 3, our local NBC station, has had pre-game coverage on since at least noon. This is as extreme as what the news channels do on elections days.

Oh no, I didn't want to hear about scorpions already being on the move. It seems rather early for them but it also is early for flies and gnats and a few other things I've seen already. They probably don't know it has been winter, since it's been so very mild. We don't have any recessed lighting in our house but we still have scorpions drop down from light fixtures. I'm hoping that will be a thing of the past in two of the rooms, now that we have new ceilings and I saw that he sealed up good around the fixture in the living room. But there are still plenty of other places for them to enter.

SCORPIONS!!!!!!! Oh God, I'll have nightmares again tonight. My brother (in the california desert) made me put my shoes on when I got out of bed in the middle of the night. Had to shake them first to make sure there were no scorpions in them, too.

    Yep, the bat was ALIVE!!!!!

When I got home from my work trip to Philadelphia, I checked the house to make sure nothing was wrong. I saw the 2 traps down over the back of the shelf and resting on a pipe. I put on disposable gloves to get rid of the "mice". When I pulled the first trap out, There was horrible hissing and sreeching. I DROPPED THE TRAP ON THE SHELF, AND RAN!!!!! I got the trouble light out to shine in there, and found the bat looked at me. When I pulled the trap, I unknowingly pulled his body out by the wing. The second trap came with him snce it was clamped down on the other wing.

When Jim had the bat in his hand, it kept hissing and screeching. It didn't stop until he put it down.

Jim now things that the great horned owl ate the bat. He says he found "remnants" of it, but I didn't see anything.

RedSquirrel~~ I made my husband put our "bat houses" as far away from the house as possible. We have plenty of room and I wanted them far away !
They (the bats) are great at skeeter/bug control here in the forest but they're still...... bats!!
I've done the prep and have all the food ready for Super Bowl. My husband will be in from his week end chores, shower and in his fav recliner to begin telling the coaches what to do and how to do it !! Me? I'll be in the back of the house, reading (or trying to) the latest book club requirement~~it is a doozy--over 750 pages~~ Team of Rivals by Doris Goodwin. I loved her other books, but had no time line like I do for this~~finish before last Thurs of this month ! Yikes. Tomorrow is my Crochet for Charity group and we'll be turning in our lap gans for wheel chair patients at our local rest home.
The rest of the week is filled with Tax appointments~holds breath that maybe we wont have to pay this year !!
Have a blessed week everyone and be safe in all you do.
PS-- our "high" today was about 30 degrees, yes, California's Sierra Nevada Mountains get COLD and Snowy (7 ft last year, none this year)

Squirrel, I'd rather have a possum hissing at me than a bat. Just as well the horned owl got the bat. The food chain is cruel but it keeps things cleaned up for us.
Mtnmom, bats catching mosquitoes is one more way the food chain helps us, but yes, they are still bats and I still hope they keep a respectable distance from my house! Enjoy your book. Sounds like curled up with a book is a good place to be, with your cold temps.
Noel, sounds like you've already been enjoying the game most of the day.
Me, I'm going to catch up on some e-mails and poke around on here. Have gotten way behind on reading posts. Good thing Barb closed a certain thread earlier today because my head was about to explode and I couldn't stop myself from reading through the whole thing. I might have said something I shouldn't at the end.

We had home made lasagna for dinner, and I am here with the computer, and the game is on in the other room. However, I spent too much time yesterday on it, so I am taking the Sunday paper into the other room, and will read, work some puzzles, while the game is on. Maybe hubby will take pity and go watch in the bedroom, and let me have the TV. LOL. Fat chance. Ha.
