Christmas at the Hortons, 1978

With "Days" taping Christmas in July this year, here's a look at how the Hortons celebrated Christmas in 1978.

EPISODE # 3316

AIR DATE: December 22, 1978

Prologue- Horton Living Room - Morning

Alice has all kinds of boxes of Christmas ornaments spread out and the huge, green, beautiful Christmas tree is up. Tom comes out of the kitchen and has to admire the tree one more time. He and Mike sure know how to pick trees; they had a good one like this last year too. Alice warns him not to be late, the entire family is coming over. In fact, she'd like him to be early. Tom looks at the ornaments, picks one up that says Timmy on it. He says they're going to have to change this. Alice says yes. She remember last year when Trish was here and Margo came for the first time. Alice sighs...A lot happens in a year. Tom says it certainly does. He kisses Alice as he gets ready to leave.

Act Three: Horton Kitchen - Afternoon

Alice is opening the oven, taking out a beautiful batch of Christmas cookies as the front doorbell rings. She wonders who it could be, wondering if it's a salesman. She bustles out into the living room and opens the door to find Mike and Margo standing there. They've come early to help out. Alice hugs Mike and gives him a big kiss. She tells him she can't believe what she heard happened to him and his friend, Chris, the night before. And here he is, big as life, looking absolutely splendid, as if nothing had happened to him at all. Mike says he is fine. Alice greets Margo. They smell something burning and rush into the kitchen. Mike explains that because of what he went through, he didn't really work hard today and got off early. Margo too. The doorbell rings again, Margo goes to answer the door and finds David, carrying Scott. The two cousins-on-law greet each other as they are now getting more closer and friendly with one another. Margo is in seventh heaven with baby Scott and asks if she can take him. She does and they go into the kitchen. David explains that Amy Kositchek left early to help her mother with their family Christmas party. David says it sure smells good in here. Alice says that no one is getting anything to eat until the others arrive. Mike thanks David for figuring out where he and Chris were and saving their lives last night. Margo gives David a special hug and kiss for that. Alice says that they really have a lot to be thankful for this Christmas. David tries to smile and agree, as do Mike and Margo,

Act Five: Horton Living Room - Evening

All the Hortons are here. The kids, those who are available, are here too: Mike, Margo, Bill, Laura, Jennifer Rose, Mickey, Maggie, Doug, Julie, Hope, David, Scott, Tom, Alice...and Steve, for the first time in many years. They reminisce about Christmases past. Julie gets Steve aside to talk to him about Theresa who said the strangest thing. Julie tells Steve that Theresa picked up one of those terribly expensive antique music boxes and thought that Steve had bought them from some handicapped friends of hers. Meanwhile, Doug is asked to sing some Christmas carols, but says he will only do so if the rest of the family joins in. After singing a song, Alice says it's time for the Horton Christmas ornaments. She hands them out to each family member. When it comes time to Janice's ornament, there is a very sad moment. Mickey puts it on the tree, hoping that next year Janice will be back to put it on herself. Then a new ornament has been bought with the name Scott on it (Timmy's has been retired). Scott watches as David, holding him, puts his ornament on the tree. Hope and Jennifer Rose then put their ornaments on the tree. We see Maggie's reaction to this, but before anything can happen, Tom has a surprise: He's found Mickey's old guitar, the one he played when he was a kid. He's had it re-string and now gives it to Mickey. Everyone asks Mickey to play something. Mickey obliges and does. Maggie slips into the kitchen. No one seems to notice except Doug, who follows her. Alice notices and wonders about this.

Act Six: Horton Kitchen - A Few Moments Later

Maggie is crying a little. Doug comes in and acts as though nothing's wrong. He knows differently, however. He asks Maggie it was seeing the kids put their ornaments on the tree. Maggie nods, trying to hold back the tears. She remember last year when Janice was here. She also remember just two weeks ago when Janice was here. Doug understands and asks her to come back into the living room. He puts his hand on her shoulder as Alice comes in and asks if anything is wrong. Maggie bravely says she's fine. She says she just needed a cold drink. Doug tells Alice he's sure she can get Maggie to come back out to the living room as he leaves. Alice tells Maggie she understands. Maggie goes into Alice's comforting arms.

All of the Hortons sing a joyful Christmas carol as the episode ends.

Thanks, but I just typed it up. It's from a script draft, so they haven't put the finishing touches on it yet, so I don't know which songs they ended up using. Actually, there's a funny note in it. I guess Natasha Ryan (Hope) was doing movies a lot during this time. It says in the script that Hope will possibly be there (if she's not busy doing a movie!). Checking the actual script cast list, it does confirm she was in the episode.

It still is a lovely Christmas, the kind that warms the heart. Now they just seem to show decorated living rooms (done by elves while everyone is asleep), 5 or 10 minutes for the Horton Ornament hanging, no Christmas songs, even though they do not have to pay royalties on most.
thank you, Jason.........was this still when Days was 1/2 hr.?

Then a new ornament has been bought with the name Scott on it (Timmy's has been retired). Scott watches as David, holding him, puts his ornament on the tree.
Too bad we can't see a clip of the 1977 ornament hanging with Scotty's original ornament that said Timmy. I had forgotten that Trish originally named him Timmy before his name was changed to Scott.

thank you, Jason.........was this still when Days was 1/2 hr.?

No, they went to an hour in April 1975. I only typed up details of the Horton scenes. There's a lot of other stuff that happens with Marlena/Don/Donna, etc.
