Well, I guess since I started this, I have to be honest:

A fifth of vodka--which is the size of the bottle that Austin was drinking from ---is around 25 ounces.
It was definitely bottom shelf vodka. The Kremlinski/St Petersburg $6.99 a fifth vodka that comes in a plastic bottle. (Which makes sense and no sense to me. Couldn't he afford something better than bum vodka?)
I would say about half the bottle had been drunk. That's about 12-14 ounces.
A decent martini is 3 ounces of gin/vodka plus a little water from the ice.
So Austin drank the equivalent of 4--maybe 5 martinis.

Three martinis get......one......pretty buzzed, not incoherent, but that person would be intoxicated. Four is definitely drunk, but not staggering, slurring drunk.
Is it pass out cold level drunk? It's getting there, but it is NOT blackout time. However, you would have a HELL of a deathly sick hangover not matter what kind of vodka was chosen.

Austin's a pretty big guy ( I would guess around 6+ feet/190lbs) and has mentioned that he boxed, which means he was an athlete and probably has a pretty good metabolism.
He should have downplayed the drunk and uplayed the hangover.

All he had to do was pour out a little more of the water in the vodka bottle and all this discussion would have been moot.

If that was his second bottle, he would have been dead.
    Period.

    Thank you for your responses.
    Sincerely,
    The Voice of Experience.

Everyone's metabolism differs, plus had Austin eaten at all that day? It all depends on many factors when/whether or not he would pass out.

Everyone knows Sami drugged Austin so he would have sex with her, thinking she was Carrie.

I meant how would Billie know this about her brother:
"Maybe that's why Billie's coming to town - to remind Austin that he can't usually - ahem - perform while he's drunk"..." ????

As someone who has been known to enjoy a martini or two, I know vodka! LOL. :wine: I agree with stellasamifam and Dana re: the various factors involved on whether Austin should have been drunk or not. If that was a cheap low-proof vodka then it wouldn't be too likely that he would have been THAT drunk. But if it was an 80-proof vodka that he drank quickly and on an empty stomach, then yes, even a 6-foot 200 lb man could get drunk off that.

I do think he said something about it being his second bottle, which in that case, I would assume it was a cheap vodka. :p

@Dark Horse - I'm not sure how she knew it, but she said it.
@Poirot - Billie's comment was uttered back before anybody knew that Sami had drugged him, in the wee early weeks of the Sami-pregnancy shocker.

That is what I initially thought, Poirot. Especially since I too remember Austin saying this was his second bottle of Vodka (cheap or not, it was a lot of alcohol). I do wish the writers would take these matters more seriously. By "matters", I mean heavy drinking, having unprotected sex with many (and I do mean many, many, many) partners, violence, etc. While I know that Days of our Lives is a soap, and I don't expect reality in every scene, a little dose of it would go a long way and would make for great story telling. Let's see someone actually appear in court for assault, rape, kidnapping. Let's see someone having a sexually transmitted disease and try to deal with it. Let's see someone trying to deal with a drinking problem, even a young character (Will, who turns to alcohol to "help" him deal with his problems, why not ?). You want drama ? You got it. But with a glimmer of hope. Let's see someone actually struggle with an issue for more than two minutes (Jack... now there is great potential). Is that too much to ask ? I guess so. Sorry if I went off topic, there !

That's waaaay too much to ask, TheWriter. But I loved your post. I too find a little reality can balance a lot of ...well, unreality. My biggest pet peeve is the college storylines...no semesters - random classes - no talk of tuition, fees, student loans, etc. An occasional paper, but mostly just lounging in a café. And I fully agree about Will - given that his dad is an alcoholic, failing to address that after his drunken evening was a major misstep on these writers' parts. But I'm not sure they ever watched Days (except, clearly, from 1999-2002, which they are apparently trying to recreate) before taking over.
