    It's funny how beautiful they look on TV, but close up, they appear sort of rough looking.

    To me they definitely look hand painted with oil paints. Thanks Jason!

    Originally, they had a specialty artist create them, but it wasn't cheap. Eventually the art department took over and started doing them in-house.

    JS, yes. To me the effort was to make them look handmade by Alice or another Horton.

    On the show, they specially order the ornaments from a man who creates them. Maggie specifically said his name a couple years ago. It was either when they added one for Sonny or Thomas. I think maybe it was Thomas' ornament because she said something like "Mr. So-and-So really had to rush this one for us."

    Found it. It was Thomas' ornament in 2015:

    Must have missed that when it first aired. He must be named for the long-time art director, Tom Early.

    Every year I look at these ornaments and think, "Who would put those horrible things on their tree??" They really are the ugliest ornaments I've ever seen. The tradition is nice. It's too bad when they started it, they didn't select some pretty ornaments.

    While they look kind of rough close up, I think they show up beautifully on-screen for some reason.

    Well, I cherish our old family 'heirloom' ornaments that are scraped, dented, or torn and place them on our tree every year. They hold precious life long Christmas memories of beloved relatives/friends, and I really do not care if someone else finds them 'tattered or torn'. Maybe that is how the Hortons view their ornaments too.
