    Very shocking, indeed. I sure wish she'd never gotten hooked up with ...

    RIP Whitney, you will be missed.

    I think that -- like Michael Jackson -- Whitney Houston was somewhat of a great singer with (at one time) a beautiful voice, but "shocking"? Sadly no.

    I don't want to be disrespectful of the dead and I've certainly no intent to be insensitive, because I am a fan of her early music. For years though, we've all heard running jokes about drug use and "crack-ish" behavior, so while -- of course -- the news of her demise is surprising, I can't pretend to be surprised.

    Like Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Kurt Kobain, and a plethora of legends before her, my personal opinion is that Whitney was simply burning the proverbial candle at both ends and waiting in the middle for the flame to catch up. All I can seem to think about right now (this is the first I've heard of it) is the number of "friends" who either stood by and watched as she self-destructed OR helped push her in that direction but will now crawl out of the woodwork to praise her name now that she's gone.

    Not to be confused with an insensitive seven-letter-begins-with-b word, my heart does sincerely go out to her family and loved ones, may she rest on peace.

    Kind of like Anna Nicole Smith or Michael Jackson; it was shocking to hear of their deaths, but not surprising.

    One can only hope they're at peace now.

    Yes, I am in no way surprised. I was shocked to hear that a very well-known and respected woman in the music industry died today at young age of 48. It was the last thing I was expecting to hear. But, yeah, I'm unfortunately not at all surprised. :(

    Very well put, Wayne. And I agree, while it is shocking, it is sadly not a surprise. Let's pray for those others who are struggling with addictions and hope they get the help they need. Not just those stars we put upon pedestals, but neighbors, family, friends, even a sad lonely face we've only seen once pass through our lives. God bless Whitney for the golden voice she graced us with, and may her soul be at peace.

    Very true CentralTexGirl. I literally hold my breath every time my best friend calls me, fearing she's calling to say her child has died from drugs.

    when michael jackson died I was absolutely devastated. I loved him so much, still do. he was not only an amazing artist, but also an amazing human being. all that molestation BS was exactly what it was BS. I'm sorry that whitney has passed away. my heart goes out to her entire family. i will pray for them.

    @Melanie,

    A bit off topic, but at age 13 in Huntsville, AL (October 6, 1979 -- I still have the ticket), The Jackson 5 was the first concert I had ever seen. I had to beg my parents to let me go, then I paid for my own ticket literally in change from my piggy bank (which *bleep* the ticket lady off to no end)...

    To say that I was a fan of young Michael Jackson is a bit of an understatement. That being said, something happened to him over the next 30 years. I don't know whether it was abuse, drugs, or what, but between all the plastic surgery, the "going white" and the drugs, he just struck me as a really messed up guy whose life was no longer his own. By that time, because of all the strange behavior, it was easy to see him as a monster.

    Near the end, he was far more about helping other artists than his own music, which is OK, because his later music was just never the same. I was therefore actually surprised -- but not shocked -- when he died.

    Now that we know the level of drug use involved with the Michael Jackson case, I can still say I'm saddened, but no longer say I am surprised.

    Back on topic, I don't know what happened to Whitney Houston. I have absolutely no idea how she died or the causes. I can only say that the tradeoffs for drug use aren't worth it. Some drugs (like marijuana) "open your mind" and let you see the world more clearly. It's absolutely no coincidence that the world's greatest music legends have always been casual drug users. The negative of opening the mind however is that you trade years of your life for the privilege of seeing it better. Again, the list of evidence is staggering.

    Elvis, Joplin, Hendrix, Morrison, Jackson.. I could go on forever.

    to the whole michael jackson thing I never in my life saw him as a monster. he was the most beautiful person on this earth. and if you truely know michael jackson, I mean truely know who he was, and every single detail of his life you will know that too. now his music stayed amazing from begining to end. every last one of his albums did amazing. the damn media was jealous of him and wanted to break him dwon. they hated his marriage to lisa marie presley and wanted to see it destroyed. michael loved lisa marie with everything in him and she loved him the same. hell she's still inlove with him today. and that gavin kid and his family who accused michael in 2005 all I will say is they will get theirs. they were nothing but a bunch of greedy, cruel liars. sorry to go off topic guys, but when it comes to michael jackson I defend him to the end because I know who he truely was and what he was all about. I am very protective of michael jackson.

    I feel for Whitney Houston's family. However, her death at an early age was inevitable given the last few years. May she rest in peace.

    Definitely not surprised... and same as Wayne, at the risk of sounding cold, when you invite drugs into your life, you know what the end will be unless you get them out. Seeing many family members lose everything from the drugs has made me jaded toward those who choose to use...

    As for her family, I do feel badly. I hope her daughter (who is also using from some sources) will see the consequences and shape up.

    Of course, though, no one truly knows the truth except the deceased (if even them). I doubt Michael Jackson truly knew who he was anymore once all the fame and drugs kicked in. For what he used to be, to what he turned into at the end, was nothing short of tragic. I am not one who thinks the molestation charges were faked, as I wouldn't put it past any user to turn that corner to abusing others. However, we'll never truly know the truth.

    Their music, at least, remains timeless.

    michael and whitney's situation are simliar in some ways, but they are not totally the same. michael wasn't a user like whitney was. all michael wanted was to get sleep. he suffered from exstreme insomia. he didn't go and get drugs off the damn street. all his medication were perscribed by doctors. and Dr. conrad murray got exactly what he deserved. the man didn't even feel one ounce of guilt over it either. he admitted that doesn't feel guilty.

    now that molestation crap again is BS. michael would never in his life do that to a child. and he was rightfully found inoccent in a court of law. gavin and his family were nothing but cruel money hungry people. that family were digusting people. they stayed being in trouble with the law. michael helped that family. he saved gavin's life. the whole thing was set up. they evenually turned on michael because they wanted his MONEY. but the little *bleep* family didn't get it and I am so glad for that.

    O.K. philip'srockstar.....did you know Michael Jackson personally? You sound like you did, and yet you never got to see neverland. You definitely hold a high opinion of him, which is your perogative. And others have different opinions which is their perogative.Please respect that.
    But, more important, please remember that this is not a debate about whether Michael Jackson did or did not do drugs, or whatever else, but a thread about a great lady singer, who sadly lost her way some years back, admitted she did, and has now died.

    @prsmelanie,

    You and I will simply have to disagree about Michael Jackson at a very core level. I can completely disagree with you but still respect your feelings on the matter. In return, I ask that you return the courtesy, but as Poirot said, this thread really isn't about him. It's about Whitney Houston, may she rest in peace.
