Does the PH of the surrounding soil have anything to do with it?

Squirrel, rural and small town areas don't ever get much attention compared with more populated areas, and yes, sadly, if there are any political advantages for people in charge, they will be exploited in today's atmosphere.

OC, I would think the water affects the pH of the soil, but I don't know. Most soil east of the Mississippi River is acid and west is alkaline. I'm thinking it's because of water runoff or seepage, etc., eroding the soil.

The Ohio contamination is due to corrosion to the inside of the old old old lead water main pipes and the lateral pipes that go to homes, schools, and businesses.

thanks for the info. So the problem didn't happen overnight. People
didn't try to fix anything until it was too late.

I hope they get water problem solved soon. Can people use the water
for washing clothes and themselves?

kat - the man running the water plant had hidden the records when tests last October showed the very high lead content . It didn't come out in the open until the schools tested the water this month because children were getting sick. The state then tested the water supply for the towns, and found the problem was wide spread. The employee who hid the test results has lost is job, is banned from town owned property, and will have criminal charges brought against him.

Kat, they can't use the water for bathing (skin rashes,) and it would probably stain light clothes.

I think Detroit still has some wooden water pipes.

Kt, yes, we have very alkaline soil here. Not so much in east Texas, I think, since some plants grow better there than here.
