It’s one of those whiplash kind of days where the scenes keep jumping back and forth after every few lines. (I really don’t know why they edit them that way some days. Just make longer scenes and less jumping around so you can follow a story better!) If you didn’t know today was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, you definitely will by the end of the episode!

Paulina, Abe, and Chanel are outside the Pub talking about the MLK celebration. Johnny comes out in a Pub apron offering coffee for the volunteers courtesy of Uncle Roman.

Chad and Everett are picking up trash in the park. Everett seems off, stumbling his words.

Chanel offers to go in and help volunteering at the Pub. Nicole comes by and gives an update that Holly is getting tested to see if she can go be treated in Italy where they brought EJ back “from the brink of death.”

At the Square, Leo and Sloan rehash their financial arrangement. Leo boasts that Lady Whistleblower is back and tells her the first column is going to blow her mind.

Chad asks Everett if he’s OK? He says since the coma he sometimes gets dizzy spells, just needs something to eat. Chad calls for the kids and they head out.

Nicole says she’d head to Italy with Holly, but EJ would stay in town to keep fighting the drug trafficking issue that is hurting the kids.

Rafe and Jada come to the park area and Jada recounts being followed in a store then as she was about to leave, the manager demanded to see her purse. Rafe asks why he didn’t tell them she’s a cop. She said she left her badge in the car and they didn’t believe her. They accused her of stealing a lip gloss that she bought 2 days ago. A cop came and recognized her, but she’s shaken.

Chanel and Johnny talk about Paulina’s medical situation. She’s worried that the doctors didn’t tell her over the phone what is wrong, and she doesn’t want Paulina to know how scared she is. Johnny says he won’t tell anyone that her hard candy shell has a soft inside.

Leo again threatens that if Sloan doesn’t continue paying up, he’ll write a scathing article blowing up the whole baby swap. He walks away and Sloan yells “you gave me your word,” just as Nicole walks into the square asking about what?

Chad and Everett are at the Spectator talking about someone covering Paulina’s podcast. Everett told the reporter to look out for health concerns. Chad says to be careful not to make something out of nothing.

Abe and Paulina are back at her office. She’s happy with the MLK celebration and hopes her voice holds up for the interview.

Rafe and Jada walk into the Pub. Jada says she’s going to volunteer and always does in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the way he paved for her to do what she does, being a black woman police detective. Johnny comes over to take their order, says he’s helping his uncle out since Tate is, well, you know. Chanel offers Jada some snacks from the bakery.

Leo waltzes in to the Spectator office asking why there’s no confetti celebrating his return. Everett asks where his cape from New Year’s Eve is? Chad scolds Leo that his article is 2 days late. He sends it from his tablet to them.

Sloan covers that the conversation with Leo was about him not paying as he agreed for her to represent him. Nicole says she seems upset. Sloan says everything is great except not being able to sleep due to the baby. She asks about Holly, and Nicole mentions Italy. Sloan asks if she’s going with her and Nicole says of course. Sloan says “that’s wonderful.”

Everett and Chad are reading the article and Leo is fishing for compliments. Both are impressed and say it was worth the wait.

Nicole asks if Sloan is happy that she’s leaving? Sloan says she just meant it’s wonderful that Holly is getting the care she needs. She’s been praying for them. Nicole didn’t take Sloan as the praying type. Sloan says things have changed and made her more religious. She tells Nicole that she and Eric are having John and Marlena over for dinner, that she’s been putting it off. She’s intimidated by Marlena because she’s so perfect. Nicole empathizes and suggests having a tall glass of wine before they get there.

Abe tells Paulina the Deputy Mayor could do the podcast, but Paulina says on this day specifically she needs to be there. Her mother marched with Dr. King.

Jada reflects on Dr. King’s words about calling out injustice.

Chanel and Johnny are at the table next to them talking about being profiled. Chanel tells Johnny how it happens all the time. She says people looked at them because they were an interracial couple in Italy.

Sloan says she has 2 big bottles. Nicole assures Sloan that Marlena isn’t as perfect as she thinks. They talk about Sami and the infamous affair. She advises Sloan not to be so hard on herself.

Leo’s article is apparently about an unknown openly black gay man who was at the March on Washington. Everett thinks the article should be under Leo’s own by line and not Lady Whistleblower. He and Chad are impressed.

Abe is working the mixing board for the podcast and asks Paulina if she’s made her follow-up appointment? She says it’s tomorrow and he offers to go with her.

Chanel explains to Johnny how lucky she feels to be where she is. Johnny says he’s the lucky one to be with her.

Rafe tells a story about being profiled at the store when he wrote a check and they saw his last name of Hernandez. Jada says at least you don’t have to worry about your hair. Chanel comes over and she asks if anyone has ever asked to touch her hair? They laugh. She and Johnny sit down and he starts to ask why it’s such a big deal but stops himself. Chanel says it’s ok, asking questions is the first step in removing biases. Jada recounts a time in school when another girl came over to her in the lunch room and started touching her and saying how soft her hair was. She went home to tell her mom and got scolded for not standing up for herself to this microagression.

Sloan thanks Nicole for the advice. Nicole says it was nice to get out of the hospital. She says they have a lot in common and in another lifetime might be friends. She also thanks Sloan for being so generous with Eric spending time at the hospital. Sloan says “I haven’t been that generous.”

Chad says maybe they should rethink if the article should be published. The Spectator isn’t known for social progressivism. Everett says it’s their job to present fair and balanced news. Everett stands up for Leo’s article and shouldn’t worry about the fallout. Chad concedes and says if there is any problem they can come at him.

More discussion about interracial marriage by Jada, Chanel, Rafe, and Johnny. Jada talks about her first husband and how her mother didn’t approve of her marrying a white Jewish man. She said it didn’t end up being an issue because he disappeared on her. Chanel talks about having all of the “other” labels as a black, bi, woman and how she just stopped worrying about the labels because it’s too much work. Johnny can’t believe they’ve never had these conversations before.

Abe offers to leave now that the sound board is set up. She says she’d love for him to be there. He says he wants to support her the way she supported him through his months of recovery. Paulina goes live on the podcast and talks about being together and begins to say a quote but her voice starts going out on her. Abe helps her finish the line.

Nicole says it was so generous of her to let her off the hook about kidnapping Jude. Sloan says it was reluctantly and then tells her about seeing Eric with her and Holly at the Square. She’s going to just have to accept that Eric is always going to love both of them and leaves.

Leo asks “Chadwick” if he can have the rest of the day off? Everett says journalists don’t really get days off. Leo mentions Xander not being there. Chad says he’s teleworking today, but then says he will get out of the office and hands him a broom to go to Salem City Park (I guess it has an official name now) for the National Day of Service in honor of MLK Day.

Back at the Pub, Jada thanks Chanel and Johnny for hanging and catching up. Johnny tells Rafe he idolized him as a kid. He says he always thought he’d end up being in the FBI. Johnny says it might be time for a new career since he’s been out of work and feels like he’s done more volunteering today. Chanel talks about how running the bakery can also be an act of service. Talks about giving back to the community. She says her mom is recording a podcast. Rafe pulls out his phone and says let’s listen to it now.

Paulina takes a drink of water and thanks former mayor Abraham Carver for the assist. She offers uplifting words of advice about raising voices together for a better world.

The Pub table offers a toast of their coffee cups to Dr. King, to the future, to “Mama,” to us.

I watched and he who shall not be named directed this PSA (Public Service Announcement) on inclusion.

After watching the clips from the older shows featuring Doug, I too long for scenes longer than a minute the choppiness is very annoying.

Overall a good show that moved no story forward. Privileged white boy seemed shocked that people of color that he knew have had issues he never dealt with, waiting tables made him feel useful. Nicole's mom waited tables to feed her family. I have a feeling I'm giving this show too much thought, so I'll sign off now.

Thanks for the write-up. I think the Everett-Chad interactions and Nicole’s surprisingly-nice conversation with Sloan actually were the best part of the show. I appreciate the effort to honor the importance of the holiday, yet a lot of the conversation felt like a PSA. I wish the dialogue could have been better so that it came across as more natural.

Thanks, ShaunP.

Jada said her white, Jewish husband disappeared. Was he involved with Stephanie at the same time when married to Jada?

Everett was getting dizzy. Does he have a split personality? Was Bobby trying to get out?

Interesting conversation Jada and Chanel had about being black. Then how people want to touch their hair.

Johnny said he was helping at the pub since Roman is shorthanded and Tate not there. Will Johnny continue to work there
or does he have another idea about a job?

Nicole is planning to go to Italy with Holly. How long will she be gone? It's Salem, maybe she doesn't leave like Wendy didn't.

Nicole told Sloan to have a big glass of wine before John and Marlena come. That might be entertaining.

What will Paulina's test result be since she's still coughing a lot?

Interesting conversation Jada and Chanel had about being black. Then how people want to touch their hair.
A few years ago they had Julie commenting on how lovely Valerie's hair was, then reaching out to touch it and being told that's inappropriate.

Later, Julie mentioned to Doug and Claire about how you're not supposed to do that (and she didn't know) and they both said they did know this was wrong.
