Harkening back to 1984, when Wayne Northrop (Roman) decided not to return to Days, the decision was made to make Drake Hogestyn (John) the new Roman. How dumb do the writers think the viewers, or the residents of Salem are? A Phoenix tattoo is all it takes to make Marlena and Bo think John is Stefano? How about little details like: height; weight; ACCENT (speech patterns)...and so fort. "Plastic surgery" can only do so much...but suppress brain cells, to the point Bo actually thinks he's threatening "Stefano" in a fight? I'm a long time loyal viewer, like everyone else, but that whole recast/plastic surgery business was a real eye roller. Especially when Wayne Northrop (Roman) returned in 1991. It made everyone in Salem seem even MORE foolish for believing John was Roman. Anyone else concur how embarrassing this all was back in the day? I know, plastic surgery is a convenient daytime story staple...but really...

edited to add actors' last names and character names....JS

At the time, there was a great deal of eye rolling, mostly because Drake H. (John) is taller than Wayne N. (former Roman). Supposedly he had had plastic surgery so he would look different, and his memory wiped away, but Stefano did supposedly infuse Roman's memories into John's brain or some such. It so sci-fi back then. Guess they thought, rather than say "Roman is now being played by...." they figured they'd run with a big story. Just like when Philip was supposed to have had a face transplant. Twas astonishing, because, he also had a whole different body type. Writers change, and so does the mind set of the soap story.
