This weekend, I watched a two-part episode that I had taped back in 1990! It was DAYS 25th anniversary, set against the backdrop of the cave-in at the Alamain mansion. Trapped were: Bo, Carly, Kayla, Shane, Julie, Alice, Jennifer, Jack, and Frankie (as Francoise Von Leuschner). Back home worrying about them at Thanksgiving time were: Tom Horton, Roman (played by Drake), Maggie, Mickey, Neil Curtis, and others. There was a flirtation going on between Maggie and Neil that I didn’t remember. Roman brought little Sami and little Eric over to the Horton house and was working with the PD to get information on the whereabouts of the missing Salemites. Tom was distraught with worry about Alice. Apparently this was going on during a time when both Marlena and Hope were “dead.” Meanwhile, Alice was injured in the cave-in, and Doctor Carly was tending to her.
While all this was transpiring, the different characters, both in Salem and at Alamain’s, were reminiscing about momentous events in their lives and we were treated to some great flashbacks. They were wonderful and heartwarming. Julie and Doug were apparently separated during this time and she was lamenting this to her grandmother at the Alamain’s. There was one flashback where Doug, Julie, Neil and Liz were at what I think is the Horton cabin, singing songs around the piano, nice and lighthearted. It made me realize that we don’t see much that’s lighthearted today. She also had a flashback of Doug singing “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” his trademark song for her.
I found a couple of clips on YouTube which I want to share with all of you. Long time viewers will remember these. Newer viewers will likely enjoy seeing couples they’ve only heard about, like Tom and Alice together in one of the flashbacks. The first clip shows the popular couples, starting with Maggie and Mickey in the early days, all the way up to Steve and Kayla, and Jack and Jennifer. Kayla was stunning when she was young. The music playing is Jeffrey Osborne’s Greatest Love Affair. It was the perfect song for these clips.
The second clip is the weddings. There was Marlena and Don, Marlena and Roman, and Marlena and John/Roman. You can see that there was incredible chemistry between Deidre and Wayne Northrop in all the flashbacks. There was also the weddings of Mickey and Maggie, Tony and Anna (check out Tony licking his lips in anticipation!), Neil and Liz, Eugene and Calliope, Bo and Hope, Shane and Kim, Adrienne and Justin, and Steve and Kayla. Bette Midler’s Gift of Love is the song playing here. Kudos to the person at DAYS who chose the songs.
As an aside, the commercial breaks were much shorter 18 years ago than they are today. During one of the breaks, there was a promo for Santa Barbara, and who should be in the clip but a young, dark-haired Roscoe Borne (Trent Robbins). Funny to see him then and now.
