Abraham Washington (Abe) Carver
Abraham Washington (Abe) Carver is the son of Benjamin and Rita Carver, both deceased. Abe is one of four siblings who include Theo Carver, deceased; Karen Carver; and Jonah Carver. He also has a son, Brandon Walker, from a long ago affair with Faye Walker. He arrived in Salem in 1981 as a member of the Salem Police Department. Through the years, Abe rose through the ranks and served in the capacity of Police Captain, Police Commander, Police Commissioner and, in 2008, was elected Mayor of Salem.
Abe fell for the beautiful Nikki Wade but the relationship failed because of his dedication to the job and her position as a Salem socialite. He and Roman Brady became fast friends as well as co-workers. In 1989, Abe married Alexandra (Lexie) Brooks aka DiMera, a fellow police officer. Early in the marriage, Lexie became quite close to Abe’s brother Jonah and it caused a rift in the Carver marriage. A forgiving man, Abe overlooked his wife’s indiscretion.
Since the 1980s, Stefano DiMera has been both Abe and Roman’s worst nemesis and neither has ever been able to prosecute him for any of his crimes. Abe came very close to putting Stefano away once but found out that Stefano had a drug in his possession that would save the life of his friend, Roman Brady. In exchange for the drug, Stefano was absolved of all his crimes in the eyes of the law and was able to live openly in Salem. Abe found out later that Stefano DiMera was the real father of his wife, Lexie.
A young many named Brandon Walker showed up in Salem with a hatred for Abe that Abe could not understand. As it turned out, Brandon knew about an affair between his mother, Faye, and Abe many years before. Brandon blamed Abe for his parents’ divorce and vowed to make him pay.
Abe and Lexie had tried for years to conceive a child but had been unsuccessful. Stefano arranged for them to adopt the child of a woman named Margo. In reality, Stefano switched the child at birth with the newborn son of Bo and Hope Brady. Abe and Lexie named their son Isaac and were very happy with their little family. When it was discovered that Isaac didn’t belong to them, Lexie fled Salem with the boy. When she returned, Isaac was given to his rightful parents, who renamed him Zack, and the other little boy was awarded to his biological father.
Lexie and Abe were left without a child and it caused a great deal of tension in the marriage. Abe felt that Lexie was too much like her father. In the process, Lexie once again got a wandering eye and had a one night stand with Brandon. When she became pregnant, she didn’t know who had fathered her child. A DNA test showed that the baby, Theo, did belong to Abe and, once again, the Carvers settled into a happy family life. Abe discovered that Brandon Walker was really his son and they parted on good terms. Abe eventually found out about Lexie’s affair with his son and it caused another rift in the marriage that Abe finally forgave. On the way to Theo’s christening, Abe was murdered by the Salem Stalker.
Months later, it was discovered that all the “murdered” Salemites were alive and well on a remote island where they had been held captive by André DiMera. By the time he returned to Salem, Abe was losing his eyesight. His eventual blindness and impotency caused problems in his marriage and, once again, his wife turned to another man. Their affair went on for months until Abe got a message to go to a certain room at a motel. Abe found Lexie and her lover (Thomas Edward TEK Kramer) in bed and vowed to divorce her and take their son. Over a period of months, the Carvers found their way back together but the happiness was short lived when Lexie was kidnapped and imprisoned for several months by André DiMera.
Abe had a cornea transplant when Zack Brady, the little boy Abe had raised as his own, died in a car accident and his organs were donated. Over time, the corneas failed and Abe had a second surgery to restore his sight.
Months after Lexie was rescued, Abe forgave her infidelity and they vowed to work on having a successful marriage. Their son, Theo, was diagnosed with autism and it devastated the Carvers. The little boy, however, has made great strides.
In 2008, Abe resigned his position as Police Commissioner and ran for mayor of Salem after the current mayor was murdered. As he had many years before, Abe vowed to make Stefano DiMera pay for his many crimes. As of today, that has not happened.
