Melanie Layton Kiriakis
When Trent Robbins showed up in Salem and reconnected with his biological son Max Brady, Max discovered he had a sister he never knew about. Max and Stephanie Johnson, his girlfriend at the time, traveled to Marseilles, France to find his sister. Melanie Layton turned out to be a little con artist. The 17-year old redhead used men for money and often called daddy Trent in the States to sweet-talk him into sending more cash. She also had a video blog called Premier Party Girl where she would share her sexy escapades with the world.
Max learned about his little sister’s true nature very quickly. After Melanie stole an expensive bracelet, she pinned the crime on Max, who was carted off to a French jail along with Stephanie. After they were released, they teamed up with Nick Fallon, who had also traveled to Marseilles from Salem. Nick was attracted to Melanie and helped to save her from a friend of her father’s who was demanding sexual favors as payment for Trent’s gambling debts. Trent often used Melanie in this manner to pay off his debts.
Max brought Melanie to Salem and, soon afterwards, Trent was murdered. Melanie became a prime suspect, and sought the help of the powerful Kiriakis family to help clear her name. The minute she laid eyes on Philip Kiriakis, she was smitten. But he didn’t believe her innocent act any more than anyone else. Stephanie believed Melanie was guilty, which put a strain on Max and Stephanie’s relationship, eventually causing their breakup. Stephanie then started dating Philip. Melanie moved into Maggie Horton’s house and grew close with Nick, who had worked on a science project with Trent, his former professor in college. The “Alternative Fuels Project” was attracting the attention of Salem’s leading businesses, including Titan and Dimera Enterprises. Nick told Melanie that she inherited Trent’s share of the project, so she used it to set off a bidding war between the DiMeras and Kiriakises.
Nick had become addicted to painkillers after he was injured in France while saving Melanie. He began behaving erratically, becoming obsessed with Melanie, at one point holding her hostage. He eventually confessed to killing Trent and went to prison. Melanie testified on Nick’s behalf and he got a lighter sentence. He then gave Melanie the rights to the entire fuel project. Using the fuel project as an enticement, Melanie got a job at Titan and took every opportunity to interfere in Philip’s relationship with Stephanie. But when Stephanie was kidnapped in retaliation for Philip’s part in Tony Dimera’s death, Melanie helped Philip save her.
With Maggie as a role model, Melanie started working on becoming a better person. She began nursing school and met intern Nathan Horton, Maggie’s grandson. The two flirted, but were distracted by the on-again, off-again status of Philip and Stephanie’s relationship. Stephanie took a liking to Nathan, who went back and forth between the two women. During one of his breakups from Stephanie, Philip turned to Melanie and they ended up having sex in a sleazy motel, unaware they were being videotaped by an unscrupulous motel manager, who planned to broadcast the sex tape over the Internet for money. Right after the motel romp, Philip got back together with Stephanie. Melanie thought she and Philip had begun a real relationship and was devastated to learn she was just a diversion to him. She and Nathan began to date just as the motel sex video went viral. As a result, Philip and Stephanie broke up for good. Philip then went after Melanie in earnest, but she didn’t trust his sincerity.
Meanwhile, Carly Manning returned to Salem with the secret that she had a daughter she gave up as an infant. The backstory: Carly had a one night stand with Dr. Daniel Jonas at a medical conference 20 years earlier. When her maniacal husband, Lawrence Alamain, found out, he threatened to kill the baby and made Carly give her up, not knowing she was giving the baby to another monster named Trent Robbins. About 20 years later, Carly murdered Lawrence when he threatened to kill Melanie. Carly sought refuge in Salem with former flame Bo Brady. Lawrence’s aunt, Vivian Alamain, followed Carly to Salem to seek her own brand of revenge. She learned Carly had a child and figured the best way to hurt Carly was to harm the child.
Despite her lingering feelings for Nathan, Melanie could not resist Philip’s attentions and accepted his proposal of marriage. On her wedding day, she wrote Nathan a letter saying she wouldn’t marry Philip if Nathan would admit his feelings for her. Melanie asked Stephanie to deliver the letter to Nathan, but she never did, and Melanie married Philip. After the wedding ceremony, Vivian lured Melanie to the roof of the Kiriakis mansion with the intention of pushing her off. Carly tried to stop Vivian and aimed to shoot her, but shot Melanie instead. Melanie survived the gunshot wound and, during her convalescence, learned that Carly and Daniel were her biological parents. After the shock wore off, along with her anger at Carly for letting Trent raise her, she accepted them into her life and enjoyed having a family. She grew especially close with Daniel. Newlyweds Melanie and Philip decided to live with Maggie to help her out while she was dealing with a recurrence of myasthenia gravis.

Chloe was engaged to Melanie’s father and was extremely jealous over Daniel’s closeness with Melanie’s mother, having been led to believe Daniel & Carly were having an affair. Chloe and Philip had sex that night. When Philip returned home to confront Melanie, she told him Nathan had kissed her and begged Philip for forgiveness. He said nothing about his tryst with Chloe. In the months that followed, Carly learned of Chloe’s one night stand, but kept mum when Chloe begged Carly not to tell Daniel, never learning the identity of the other man. When Chloe discovered she was pregnant, Carly helped her get a paternity test which revealed Daniel to be the father. However, Caroline Brady told Kayla and Stephanie that she switched the test results and Philip was really the father.

Melanie agonized about keeping Chloe’s secret as she watched Chloe and Daniel happily get married. Melanie and Chloe were both at the Horton cabin when Chloe went into labor. Nurse Melanie helped deliver the baby, and Daniel arrived with Philip in the nick of time.
Melanie contracted a potentially deadly virus after treating a patient from Guatemala who died from the disease. She was placed into quarantine with Nathan, who also had the virus, both recovering after her father researched the disease and formulated a cure.
