old soaps

Well, Guiding Light was the one for me. Only other soap I watched besides Days. (could only get 2 channels back then). Was really sad when it ended, tho they did make sure the characters all got a happily ever after.

Guiding Light was my first. I fell in love with the gothic Nola and Mr. McCord (Quint) story and then got swept away with Beth's adventures with Phillip and Lujack. I stuck around into the late nineties when I finally lost interest.

brisbydog, Mr. McCord and Nola were two of my favorites on Guiding Light, which I used to watch with my mother-in-law before going to night classes at law school. Anther favorite plot was when the erratic Carrie Todd had an affair with the teenaged handyman. The show must have had money then because I recall scenes being shot on Barbados.

Another old-time favorite was Another World when Iris was trying to keep Rachel away her wealthy father, publisher Mackenzie Cory, played by the wonderful Douglass Watson. Another favorite on that show was Sven the evil butler. If this guy worked at the DiMansion EJ, Stefan Zero, and Kritter Kristen would be hopelessly outclassed.

And me, as I said, Guiding Light and Days. GL is gone now....so just leaves Days.

I probably might have started another soap after GL was gone........but all the new ways of broadcasting.....just not interested. I Hate Days streaming, don't know why they could not continue on regular TV........oh, well, guess most all enjoy it that way. However, while I went for the "deal" that was offered , I resent having had to pay to watch Days, and since they are planning to raise the price, I doubt I will be watching after my contract is up. But, who knows, maybe they will offer a deal to renew. LOLOL. Yeah, I can dream, too.

I also remember the radio soaps, which I would listen to when I was sick and home from school. The two I recall were “Our Gal Sunday” and the “Romance of Helen Trent.” Then, as now, they were about women with problems seeking love and romance. They were indeed only 15 minutes long. It’s hard to imagine current writers trying to make episodes that short. They’d have to cut their specialty, the fluff, and stick to what’s important.

Oh, my gosh, I remember those, cuz when home sick, all one had was radio. I remember One Man's Family, (just the title, nothing about it), wasn't there one called Ma Perkins?

I never watched Search for Tomorrow, but when they announced their final episode, I purposely tuned in........Matt Ashford (Jack on Days) was on it. Always liked him, no idea why Days doesn't use him more.......guess cuz Melissa Reeves (Jennifer) moved to Tennessee and wanted out completely.

I wish we could get Coronation Street.....a British Soap. When I was in England, I saw a few episodes, (the 70s) and wished then the U.S. had the show. Yeah, complications, I am sure. At one time all those shows (soaps) were so popular, don't know what happened, except perhaps they just could not get writers who understood daytime & the audience. AND how the audience changes over the years. Heck look at all the debuts of prime time shows that are quickly gone. The writers in L.A. think something is really cool, but mid-America doesn't agree. LOL
