Emmy-winning actor Andre Braugher, whose illustrious TV career included roles on Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died at the age of 61. He passed away Monday following a brief illness, his publicist Jennifer Allen confirms to TVLine.


Born in Chicago, Braugher made his film debut in the 1989 Oscar winner Glory and appeared in a series of Kojak TV movies before landing the role of interrogation specialist Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC police drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Acclaimed for its gritty portrayal of crime and punishment on the streets of Baltimore, Homicide ran for seven seasons, with Braugher earning two Emmy nominations for best lead actor in a drama series, winning the award in 1998.

He was only 61 years old. A great actor.

Very sad news for me. He was a favorite actor of mine, going back to Homicide: Life on the Street, and more recently, excellent appearances on Law & Order: SVU. My sympathies to his family and friends. Rest In Peace, Mr. Braugher.

He was such an amazing actor. So sad to hear that he died.

I'm so sad. Why are so many men in their early 60's passing away this year? It's kind of freaking me out a little.

Anyway, I loved this actor. He was so so good, and I enjoyed everything I saw him in. Prayers for his family and friends. 61 is just far too young.

I also liked his series "Men of a Certain Age," co-starring Ray Romano and Scott Bakula. Ran for two seasons, 2009-2111.

I loved him on everything I saw him in. Homicide filmed here, where I live.

I also loved his recurring character in SVU. I thought he had incredible chemistry with Mariska Hargitay (Capt. Olivia Benson).

I have always wanted to watch this series again. Now more than ever, with the passing of Andre Braugher as well as Richard Belzer, who died earlier this year and had created the role of John Munch on this show. Munch became a series regular on Law & Order: SVU. Fingers crossed Homicide: Life on the Street becomes available to stream soon.
