Just how did Abby gain access to Snyder's office? Did Kayla allow her in there? What the heck?

Yes. Kayla let her in because all confidential patient files had already been removed. What Abby found was a report form that Snyder had removed from Gwen's file and hid in one of his books. At no time did Abby go through patient files.

But Abby shouldn't have been allowed in Snyder's office regardless—particularly when she admitted she was looking for information about the relationship between a doctor and a patient. His personal effects are none of Abby's business as he was an employee. His professional effects are none of Abby's business as he was a doctor. There are privacy laws for both. At that point, Kayla's duty is to say no. It's such terrible writing.

Also given the circumstances of Snyder's death the police should have gone through all of his personal items during their investigation.

They very well may have done so.....however, the small piece of paper, was in the pages of a book, a mystery novel, of which Dr. Snyder had several. They may have looked at a couple, then ignored them. Kayla probably figured since everything had been gone over in there, no harm.......just surprised she did not stay with them herself, or have a staff member as well.
But then, we all know Re-ron is rather slipshod, so as long as DA PLOT is served, tis o.k. for him,

It is so out of character for Dr. Kayla to let someone rummage through a hospital office.
Like JasonDiSpeech says "Da Plot"!!!!! It's ridiculous to think a doctor would actually allow this.

tHE thing is.....that office would have been cleared out of all personal things, which would have been boxed up, set aside pending a family member coming forward eventually, for a certain length of time, before disposing of them completely, whether donations, or the dumpster. The office would have been cleaned, washed down, etc. and eventually assigned to or occupied by someone else. But, that would be real world, not Salem, which has it's own set of rules, habits, ways to do things.

Yes, Salem where apartments, houses, holding jail cells, medical offices are as rare as white whales and yet Dead Dr. Snyder's office is allowed to remain untouched......

Until a cub reporter wants to go snooping through it looking for dirt on her sister..... not looking for who was behind the drugs, or anything about how long the drug thefts where going on.... but dirt on what she knew had to be there. Welcome to Salem
