She is the only girl, other than Julie, who has really interested him in years. However, Marlena informs him he is coming on much too fast. As she heads for the bathroom, Julie arrives at Don's door. He is surprised and embarrassed to see Julie, knowing that Marlena is in the other room and should be right out.

Julie needs a friendly shoulder to lean on. She can't face going to the Justice of the Peace's office. Don is shocked until Julie says that she and Doug are going with Robert and Rebecca, who will be married tonight. Then Julie's eyes light on Marlena's shoes, and Julie apologizes for interrupting Don's evening. Marlena goes to see Linda at the law office and suggests she have Mickey over for dinner. However, Marlena says it would be better if Linda and Mickey weren't alone, whereupon Linda proposes she ask Mike to join them. Marlena agrees, and they both look at one another speculatively - maybe they sized each other up too hastily.

At the sanitarium, Marlena finds Don wanting to visit Mickey. Don tries to apologize for last night, but Marlena cuts him off: From now on she has no interest in him except for his help for her patient, Mickey Horton. Exiting Mickey's room at the sanitarium after discussing office business, Don finds Marlena waiting, says he has a few things to discuss about Mickey, will she meet him later for a drink. Although she's wary, Marlena agrees and Don leaves. Marlena talks to Mickey, and he admits he's afraid to leave the sanitarium. She says Linda wants very much to fix dinner for him, and Mike will pick him up so the three of them can have dinner together. Mickey asks Marlena if Linda is afraid to be alone with him.

Marlena has to convince a doubtful and nervous Mickey that he is ready emotionally to go out for an evening of dinner at Linda's apartment. He challenges her about not thinking he's up to going out to a public place, only to someone's house where he'll be supervised. Put on the spot, she says if he feels like going out after dinner, to do so.

Outside, she tells the waiting Mike that if Mickey seems to want to test her statement, to take him somewhere. It's important he doesn't feel he's being supervised. Later, at Doug's Place, Don and Marlena talk of Mickey and are surprised to see Amanda Howard enter the place with Greg. Marlena is devastated when Mickey comes in with Mike and Linda. She fears he will think she's there to "supervise" his behavior. And Mickey's penetrating eyes show that indeed he does think that.

Linda accuses Marlena of spying, but Marlena says she had no idea they would show up here. She goes back to her table, asks Don to kiss her, and they exit. Mike, relieved, tells Mickey that she probably didn't even know he was there, but Mickey is only half buying. Linda sees the way Marlena handled things, says score one for the doctor. Marlena says she didn't know it was a contest. Alone, Linda says to herself that with her it's always a contest where Mickey is concerned. Mike leaves also, realizing his attitude about Marlena isn't helping his Dad.

Angry and defiant that Marlena is there to check up on him, Mickey strides into the room, slamming the door. Although Linda considers the evening a disaster, Marlena does not, and the latter suggests the two of them work together to help Mickey.

When Linda goes in to say goodbye to Mickey, he makes it clear that he feels both Marlena and Don are against him, to which Linda replies that if it weren't for Don, there would be no law practice. Moreover, although she doesn't particularly like the lady psychiatrist, Marlena seems to have her head on straight. After Linda leaves, Mickey finds he really wants Marlena to like him. He just has trouble expressing his need for people. With the rain pouring down outside, Mickey and Marlena play chess, Mickey verbally testing her.

However, Marlena handles the situation like a true professional, telling him that for the most part, she finds being his therapist a challenge and obviously she is not afraid of him or she would not be alone with him. Whereupon, Mickey asks her to go for a walk in the rain with him. Sitting on a bench under a tree dripping with water, Mickey tells Marlena he isn't sure where his home is because he doesn't love anyone, to which Marlena replies he will in time. Meanwhile, Don proceeds to ask Julie to marry him, slipping a beautiful engagement ring on her finger. Mesmerized by Don's persuasive kisses, Julie agrees to marry him.

Marlena tells him that he's been making progress. She says she'll okay letting him take Maggie out, but asks why he changed his mind, since Dr. Powell told her that Mickey had said he didn't want to. Mickey says because of guilt. He tells Marlena that Bill performed surgery of Maggie so she could walk again. He says he gave Maggie a red dress and dancing slippers and wants to keep his promise to her.

Marlena says she'll call Maggie and make the arrangements. As Marlena heads into the hall, she sees Dr. Powell and tells him Mickey is having too much family pressure. Marlena can sense Bill is uptight. Marlena tells Bill that Mickey is ready to be alone with Maggie. Marlena senses Bill's hostility. He tells Marlena it's because Mike got drunk and ended up at Linda's apartment. She's closing the door on her work, on everyone.

Cast: Alice, Mickey, Bill, Marlena, Laura, Rosie, Jennifer Rose, Barbara Randolph.
Sets: Bill's Clinic Office, Laura's Bedroom & Hallway, Laura's Den, Laura's Front Hallway, Sanitarium Dayroom.

At the clinic, Marlena takes careful note as Bill unconsciously removes a rubber ball from his desk and squeezes it to exercise his arm. She wants him to help her see Laura. Every time Marlena calls, Laura is "resting." Can't Bill face the fact that his wife is having an emotional breakdown. Bill concedes, but wants to speak with Laura first. Later, at the sanitarium, Marlena challenges Mickey to a set of ping pong and he smashes an unreturnable ball across the net. The game becomes a biting verbal match.

Mickey is ice. He feels abandoned. Marlena has had very little time for him lately. With part fear and part anger, he accusingly tells her of his second out-patient visit. He disobeyed the rules by driving Maggie home. He could have strangled her. Patiently, Marlena explains that she has taken over part of Laura's caseload, so there are other patients who need her. And, besides, it was a risk well-taken because they believe Mickey is getting better. Mickey warms. She's the only one who's been honest with him. He's missed her desperately...he thinks he's falling in love with her.

Marlena gently suggests that his feelings are more dependence than love. Mickey begins to press about Laura's situation and Marlena confides that Laura's world seems to be shattering, partly because of Mike's rejection. Mickey wants Marlena to help her. He doesn't hate Laura. As for Bill, Mickey wants to know if he should feel guilty because of Bill's gunshot wound which hasn't healed properly. Marlena doesn't sway Mickey's feelings one way or the other. She assures him, though, that he's on the way back to reality.

Later, at the Horton home, Bill reveals to Marlena that Laura's mother has been in a Chicago mental institution for a long time and Laura's pattern of withdrawal is similar. Laura's face is still in shadow, but tears are visible on her cheek as she and Marlena discuss Mike and how vulnerable Laura is to him, her depression, her guilt. And although Bill isn't aware of it, Laura knows about his arm. Marlena tells a surprised Laura that Mickey also knows, yet feels no guilt. When is she going to stop? Laura sobs, letting it all out. For the first time she can unburden her secret. What she feels is a tremendous fear, not guilt. Afraid all of her life she will wind up like her mother. Marlena lays it on the line. Whether or not that fear becomes a reality is up to Laura, she challenges.

Here is Deidre's 17th episode, # 2713, which aired August 25, 1976.

Bill somberly reflects on his earlier conversation with Laura. He had begged Laura to face her emotional problems. Give Marlena a chance to help. Laura admits to Marlena that she can't seem to be a wife to Bill, and Marlena says it's a normal reaction after a woman has had a difficult birth. Bill had trouble with the delivery because of his wounded arm, but luckily Rosie was there to help. Now Bill needs here more than ever because of his growing anxiety over that arm.

Laura's darkened room reminds her of the love birds she gave her mother. Her mother had kept the cage covered. Laura's room...her cage...is like a safe, dark womb. Marlena reminds her that animals and people die without light. Laura weeps silently as Marlena advises her not to let the draperies become her birdcage cover. Still, she pleads with Marlena to leave them closed. Later, at Doug's Place, Marlena tells Don and Julie of Laura's emotional breakdown and promises to also speak with Tom and Alice. Laura will need all of her family and friends to aid in her recovery.

Julie promises to visit Laura tonight and when Don goes for her wrap, Marlena reminds Julie how lucky she is to have Don; he loves her so. Julie agrees. She's determined to be a good wife. Rosie reminds Bill and Laura that Jennifer is six months old today. She sets up a fancy dinner in Laura's still semi-dark room, trying to stifle tears as she leaves them alone. Bill insists on lighting the candles. Laura pleads but Bill wants "to see my wife."

Romantic candlelight affords the first clear look at Laura and it's difficult for Bill to find the words because it has been such a long, long time. Bill tells her how much he loves and has missed her, how he's needed her to say the same things to him, especially after she locked him out of their bedroom. They both agree to never let it happen again. Laura wants to see Jennifer Rose now, too, and Bill fetches her from Rosie. Bill proudly and lovingly watches Laura gently rock their baby.

Upstairs, Laura is nervously preparing to see her son but Bill, knowing Mike's attitude, is inwardly concerned at what might happen. Rosie is putting Jennifer Rose in Mike's arms, hoping the sight of his little sister will soften Mike's bitterness, which indeed seems to help. When Bill enters the room, Rosie leaves with the baby and there is an electric moment as Laura descends the stairs and sees her son for the first time in so long.
