Andrew had been kidnapped for several months and Kimberly/Shane were fighting about the search for Andrew. It had gotten really ugly (Kim's trust issues + Shane's inability to find Andrew) and it culminated in a break-up RIGHT before the ceremony started. Kimberly returns the engagement ring to Shane moments before they walk down the aisle for Marlena and Roman's (John) wedding:
