Here it is, two days from Christmas and I am *SO* not feeling it. Pretty much feeling "just another day" between my family 1000 miles away and all the forced commercialism, not to mention that my co-workers seem to think it's ok to blast Christmas muzak over their iPhones at about 45dB all day long.

This just dawned on me when I realized I wished everyone a "Happy Holidays" in the other post when I'm usually such a strong defender of "Merry Christmas". Just not feeling it for a myriad of reasons. Sorry.

That being said, I sincerely hope that you guys aren't feeling the same and that you all have wonderful plans for Christmas.

I'm kinda there with you, Wayne. There is a lot of family activity going on, so I DO have that. And I'm enjoying getting together with kids, grandkids and friends. BUT there are several "downers" going on that are putting me in a pretty low mood. I haven't decorated with the usual Christmas lights, etc. I'm looking forward to it just being over with.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Wayne!! I've been singing along to my Christmas music, which drives my dog crazy, but I'll carry on! It feels good! You can find something that makes you get in the spirit, too, maybe. I hope so!

I only put up a 4 foot tree this year instead of one of my 6 foot trees. 3 wreaths complete my decorating. I used to have lights lining the windows inside and out plus the hedges. Doing less and less each year.

I just want to spend the time in my own house with our old family traditions like I have for the last 59 years. Since my Mom passed away, I'm the only left here in town. Since 6 would have to come here from Pittsburgh, my oldest sister now has Christmas at her house with just me doing the traveling. She tried to lay a guilt trip on me today because I won't be going to her church with her family on Christmas Eve. Well, that just isn't Christmas to me since they are of a different faith. (My sister and brother-in-law both changed faiths when they married.) I want to go to Christmas Eve mass at my own church. Then watch midnight mass from the Vatican. Oh well, will be driving to Pittsburgh early Christmas morning instead. The guilt will be laid on thick.

Merry Christmas ya'll! Christmas is first & foremost the birthday of my Savior, so it is a high holy day. Secondly, I'm still a child at heart and love the songs, decorations, and spirit of giving at this time of year. A couple of years ago, after my Mom passed, I found the secret to enjoying this holiday amidst pain: give and give some more. That's the true source of joy.

I have a very hard time with Christmas music. Pretty bad for a church organist. Almost every time a Christmas song comes on I turn the channel/station. I don't know why. Perhaps some of my feeling is commercialism, some of it too much of a good thing.
But, I am having a wonderful time with my family and the house is quiet, no music!!!
ETA...I love the Transiberian Orchestra.

The guilt will be laid on thick.
I forget the exact quote, so forgive me for paraphrasing, but "the only person who can let someone else make you feel bad is you".

Your family has a choice. They can see you when you get there, or not.

When my mother passed away in 2003, Christmas for our family pretty much died with her. My sister and her family went the "get super-religious" route while my father and I -- who've never been church folk -- just do our own thing. I'm stuck in D.C., Dad got on the bike and rode to Florida ("because he could"), and my sister's family is pretty much running 99-mph with church activity and with my brother-in-law's family.

Now, if we get together at all, it's just not the same, but it is awfully nice to see my family altogether. I make it a point to go down whenever I can to see them, holiday or not.

@Sunny,

Personal family reasons aside, Commercialism pretty much sums it up for me. Well, that and the fact that society (as a whole) is simultaneously pimping Christmas shopping while trying to get that "offensive Christ fellow" removed from Christmas events all together...

Well, with me, my family has been scattered all over the U.S. for years and years. So no family Christmases for me. Used to love to decorate the house, did a bang up job, but every year has been a bit less, and this year....A LOT LESS. Barely anything. I also put up just the 4 foot, or 3 foot tree (got to measure it, lol) but the lights never even got turned on til yesterday.
With my son-in-law passing away just a couple weeks ago, just has been hard to get "into" it, and honestly.....weather just did not permit me to get out into the crowds, etc. (Plus landing in that ditch did not help).
I love the music, sing along all the time, radio is on constantly. I have watched tons of Christmas movies, so I guess that fills the void. Plus good memories of "old times". God Bless us, everyone, and I always, but always say MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!

If everyone used google+ and had a webcam/microphone, all us lonely heart sob stories could do a SalemSpectator Christmas Day hangout video conference... :)

You don't want to come to AL, the weather is supposed to take a nasty turn tomorrow. Guess it's a good thing my family is getting together on Christmas Eve as usual. I have no plans for Christmas Day. What is Google+? Sorry, I'm pretty dense about online communication, lol.

Heck, I only heard of Skype.....what IS Google+

I would be in for a scheduled Christmas party if Wayne can set it up to keep my private info off the board. :) I don't want everyone who comes through here finding me on this Google+ thing, lol.

I'll be back from Pittsburgh by 6:00 pm on Christmas Day.

Have built in camera and microphone with my laptop. Haven't used them yet.

A group get together sounds good. BUT I haven't joined Google+ because it seems to have more privacy issues than even Facebook. Wayne, if you can give some tips or reassurance of locking personal info from everyone on Google+, I'll be happy to join. Used to have fun getting a group together through the old Messenger video chat feature.

Got them in my laptop, too, never used either.

I can't make any assurances of anything whatsoever. I don't run G+.. I can say that -- just like Facebook -- what (or the amount of) data you put into their system (outside of a username and password) is entirely up to you.

I understand the timid nature of things, and I'm not advocating just jumping in willy-nilly, but about every non-SS friend I have has a G+ account with no ill effects (about the same as Facebook, Tw*tter, or any other social media site)...

The only reason I thought of it is that they're the first social media site that openly made it easy to go there, click on your friends, and click on "hang out" which puts you all into a video conference, which is actually kinda cool and fun, not that anyone here wants to see my ugly mug or anything.

Mine either, Wayne, lol. Guess I could wear a paper bag over my head. heehee

Wayne, what I meant by assurances is that you have never had any problems with your required profile information getting out from Google+.

Well, let us know here if anyone is doing it. Should be quick to set up.

I've never had any problems with anything "getting out". I just don't get out there and shout out all my skeletons for the world (or even my friends) to see. Online presence just takes a very minimum of common sense. :)

(For all anyone really knows, I could be "Juan the pool boy from Equador" -- haha)
