Weekly Daytime Ratings Charts for 1980's posted

Seems Days has been sort of in the middle, but '81 was when it began to slide downward. Earlier today, read something about the THREE remaining soaps only having a fraction of the kinds of ratings soaps used to get. Also am guessing, because Days is on streaming Peacock. can't be included in the counting of viewers.

Tis amazing all the different kinds of information you have gathered, saved and have available for us all. Thank you Jason, tis a huge thing you have undertaken, and it is much appreciated.

Interesting to note the ratings of soaps long gone now. Guiding Light seemed to be on a par with Days back then...Guess they faltered somewhere down the road.........it ended in 2009 because of low ratings!

Just my opinion, but, tho there are a lot of writers in the industry, doesn't seem like many are able to write for a soap. Then again, you don't see much of prime time soaps either.

Thanks! I posted the 1989-2000ish Soap Weekly charts many years ago to get fans up to the years Soap Opera Network had started posting the weekly charts. So, it's nice to finally have gotten the 1980's ratings as well.

I put this offer out on SON as well, so if anyone here has any random game show or Saturday morning show or some rating they would like to know from 1978-1992, let me know. I know up until now only the primetime data has been readily available, so it's nice to now have the other time periods (daytime, Saturday morning, late night) for Nielsen ratings now available. You can just post here in this thread if you have any specific show you want me to look up.

THE TWO WEEKS IN A ROW "DAYS" WAS RATED # 1

Here's a look at the two weeks in a row (7/25/88 and 8/1/88) that "Days" reached # 1 in the soap ratings.

Another item of interest (besides ratings) from the Nielsen lists is they also confirm all of the preemptions for all of the soaps from 1978-1992, so you just have to look at the Notes column for each year and see exactly when each soap was preempted. The only week preemption data (and Nielsen ratings) are not available is the week of 8/24/81.

And for those looking through the Nielsen charts for the first time, you may notice that there are 4 weeks per year listed as "fast national" weeks. Up until September 1987, Nielsen did not count ratings (for yearly averages) for 4 weeks a year (usually the weeks around Christmas Day, last week of April, week around July 4 and week around Labor Day). The ratings for those weeks are just preliminary numbers and do not count towards the yearly averages of the shows. Since September 1987, Nielsen has reported final numbers for every single week, so those are the ratings fans are more accustomed to seeing (without the 4 gap weeks).

Also, explanatory notes have been added to the 1980's pages to explain the columns and the meaning of the "fast national" weeks, whose numbers are not counted towards the yearly averages of soaps (something Nielsen ended in 1987).

1986-1989 will be posted soon. Click here for all weekly Nielsen charts available from 1980-Present: http://www.jason47.com/days/nielsensweekly.html

COMPLETE LIST OF "DAYS" FULL & PARTIAL PREEMPTIONS: 1979-1988:

Thanks to the Nielsen books, we now have confirmation of not just the full preemptions of "Days", but also all of the partial preemptions and any episodes rated as "breakouts" or specials. Note: Partial preemption data is unavailable for 3 weeks (8/24/81, 10/19/87, 12/14/87). Here is the complete list: Per my previous preemption research, the 23-minute episode that aired on 10/19/81 and the 9-minute episode aired on 8/21/84 were considered national preemptions and re-aired the following day. For some unknown reason, the 12-minute episode aired on 8/20/82 was not considered a national preemption.

Other items of note: "Days" had two special time slot airings: It aired from 2-3PM on 1/1/79 and was split in half and aired from 1-130 & 230-3PM on 12/8/87.

Here are the VCR recording shares for the week of 12/12/88. Thanks to all those early VCR-taping "Days" fans who saved their tapes and made it possible for us to still enjoy lots of Days from the 1980's!! And, kudos to "Days" for having double the share of most every other soap for VCR recordings!!

DAYS.... 1.0
AMC.... .7
OLTL...... .6
GH...... .6
AW..... .5
ATWT...... .4
YR....... .4
GL........ .3
SB....... .3
BB....... .2
LOV..... .2
RYAN.... .2

I had a VCR in 1988, but the settings were on the wrong thing, and we sort of gave up on "fixing" it, even though it was just the settings. I randomly tried again to fix at some point in 1989 and got it working again, and then started taping Days in July 1990!

1978 WEEKLY NIELSEN CHARTS NOW POSTED, PLUS A CHECKLIST OF NIELSEN RATINGS DATA STILL MISSING SINCE 12/26/77

The 1978 weekly ratings data is now available here: http://www.jason47.com/days/ratings1978.html

In addition, here is a checklist of the 10 weeks of Nielsen ratings data still missing since the week of 12/26/77:

Two Full Regular Weeks (2): 4/10/78, 4/17/78. These two weeks are missing the final ratings/shares/affiliates/clearances and partial preemptions data. Full preemption data is confirmed by comparing the # of telecasts in the preceding and succeeding books. ATWT had one preemption during the two missing weeks.

Two Partial Regular Weeks (2): 10/19/87, 12/14/87. These two weeks have ratings data, unconfirmed but likely to be accurate, from a SON post in 2019. These weeks are missing the shares/affiliates/clearances and partial preemptions data. Full preemption data is confirmed by comparing the # of telecasts in the preceding and succeeding books.

Fast Weekly Weeks (6): 3/20/78, 4/24/78, 6/26/78, 8/28/78, 12/25/78, 8/24/81. These six weeks are all missing the preliminary ratings and full/partial preemptions data.

All weekly Nielsen ratings charts from 1978-Present are now posted here, except for 1988 and 1989, which will be posted in the next few months: http://www.jason47.com/days/nielsensweekly.html
