The final chapter.
At the riverfront pier
(Sami hasn’t been to see EJ in two weeks. Through John, she knows EJ is awake and has been asking about her. When Marlena asked her if she’s made a decision about letting EJ see the children, she stopped going to see EJ. She couldn’t make up her mind if she should give him a chance… But she couldn’t get it out of her head him telling her he loved her. How did she really feel?)
Sami: (standing on the pier, looking out at the water) What am I supposed to do? Couldn’t he still be dangerous?
(Someone walks up behind her and put their arm around her)
Steve: What are you doing out here talking to yourself?
Sami: Steve! I didn’t hear you walk up. Just standing around sorting out things. You know.
Steve: I understand. Well, I THINK I can understand your situation. You still don’t know if you can trust Mr. Elvis, huh?
Sami: Well… No. I don’t. He seems like a different person. But I just can’t get past what he once was. He was terrible.
Steve: Well, take it from someone with quite a shady past too… I was damn lucky and blessed Kayla gave me chance. And another, and another! She believed in me, when no one should have.
Sami: Yeah…But…
Steve: Butts are for donkeys and cigarettes. Get to know him as he is now. Give him a chance.
Sami: I don’t know…That is a big chance!
Steve: Sometimes those big chances are well worth it.
Sami: Maybe…
Steve: In the meantime we have a big party to go to!
Sami: A party? What for?
Steve: Oh come on! Have you been living under a rock, honey? The Brady Independence celebration. Every Brady in Salem, all their friends are celebrating the end of Stefano’s rule over this town. At first Caroline had a hard time celebrating a human’s death, but Roman and Bo helped her see this as a new beginning. She couldn’t argue.
Sami: I don’t know if I really feel like celebrating.
Steve: Well this isn’t just any party. This is an event! All week long. John has some property outside of town, and really has done this right. He’s brought in some pretty wild stuff. It’s a regular carnival. A Ferris wheel, Squirrel Cage, Tilt-a-Whirl, even a huge carousel for the kiddies. It is going to be a blast. Come on Sami, you need to go. You’re quite a heroine as well.
Sami: Huh. I cannot believe I’m the one who ended Stefano’s reign. Well, if it weren’t for you…and John. This would have never have taken place. You are just as much as a hero as myself.
Steve: Ha. All in a days work.
Sami: So modest. Why don’t you go? If this is going on all week, I’ll just go another day.
Steve: Ah, but tonight are the fireworks. Hear they are going to be pretty amazing.
Sami: I don’t know Steve, maybe. I just don’t think I am in a partying mood.
Steve: Well, it’s across from the Shawn and Zack Brady Memorial Park. Be there, or be square!
Sami: (smiles) We’ll see. But don’t count on it.
Steve: Hmph. Don’t be a party-pooper.
(He walks away and leaves her to her thoughts)
Sami: (whispers) I would have thought life would have been much simpler after Stefano’s permanent departure from Salem.
At the grand Brady Celebration:
(Everyone is enjoying the extreme festivities. John and Marlena are enjoying a sweet kiss on the Ferris wheel, Bo and Hope are watching Ciara laugh merrily on the carousel. Brady won’t allow Nicole on any of the rides as a precaution. They are however enjoying an offensive hamburger and fries. {She’s craving spicy curly fries} Melanie is watching Philip and Nathan try their hand at the mechanical bull. Philip even bought a cowboy hat from a vendor and looks quite smashing. Stephanie is in the arcade practicing on one of the race car games…reliving old memories behind the wheel of a real car. Roman convinced Kate to come to the party, even though she sports quite a scar on her face from the fire. The ordeal has mellowed her somewhat, and she is starting to fall for Roman all over again. Victor is teasing Caroline at the Tilt a Whirl, telling her they are NOT too old to ride such things. Maggie is watching her grandson Nathan ride the mechanical bull, with her hand over her eyes, peeking now and again. She is later joined by Doug and Julie who look grand dressed in jeans and western shirts. )
Brady: Are you going to eat ALL of those fries?
Nicole: I just might. I’m thinking this little sweetheart of ours has to be a boy. I haven’t ever been this hungry. Oh! My! He just kicked! He kicked, I felt it, Brady! (she is about five and a half months along now…)
Brady: Amazing! (puts his hand to her tummy, baby Brady kicks again) Wow. That is something else. Hey littlest.. I cannot wait to meet you!
Arianna: (walks up and forces a smile) Hey, Brady… Nicole.
Brady: Ari! Hey…How are you doing?
Arianna: Good. Good. It’s nice to see you too so happy. I wish
You both well. I am going to see about getting on the Ferris Wheel…
Brady: (gets up to walk to her before she goes) Ari, I’m sorry things between us…
Ari: (smiles broadly) Oh, don’t worry about me! I have found someone…
Max Brady: Hey, Brady, Nicole! How are you doing?
Brady: Max? When did you get here?
Max: I’ve been back in town for a few days. Arianna and I have been communicated back and forth on the internet. She wrote me once with some questions about the pub, and one thing led to another.
Brady: That’s great. I am glad you two found each other.
Nicole: (she stands) Max, it’s good to see you again!
Max: Wow… It’s true! You are pregnant. Congratulations!
Nicole (Smiles broadly) Thank you Max. I couldn’t be happier!
Arianna: Come on Max…let’s go for a spin on the Ferris Wheel.
Max: Nice seeing you two! (they walk away)
Brady: Wow…Max and Arianna. That is pretty cool…
Nicole: You don’t have any regrets do you?
Brady: Uh-huh. No way, no how! I love you!
Nicole: I love you, too! (sweet kiss…)
(And in the midst of the midway walks a tall man who seems a bit uncomfortable in this party atmosphere. He is walking toward the picnic tables set up for partygoers to eat and socialize. He pauses to look at the stars, the moon. Sighing heavily he sits down watching the others… Elvis has his mind only four people he’d hoped to see here. Sami, Allie, Johnny, and Sydney.)
John: Hey! EJ… Good to see you out and about.
EJ: Yeah, no chains attached to me. Not lying in a hospital bed. I am making quite the progress, eh?
John: Very much so. How have you been doing?
EJ: Still weak, somewhat. The headaches are gone. Doing lot better, thank you. Have you seen…
John: Samantha? No. Not today.
EJ: Oh.
John: You haven’t talked to her?
EJ: No. I’m afraid I haven’t.
John: Sorry man. Wish I could be of some help.
EJ: It’s not your place. Don’t worry about it, John.
(Moments later, dresses in tight dark blue jeans, a white western shirt, with three kids tagging along is Samantha. Her hair is wavy and flowing in the breezes. She smiles when she sees John, and puts her head slightly down when she notices EJ)
Sami: John, hi. I thought I would bring the kids.. They wanted to join in the fun. I didn’t really explain what this celebration is about… I just think the less they know the better. Um…Hi, EJ.
John: Hey kids, how about if Pa Pa John takes you all to the carousel? Would that be fun?
Kids in Unison: Yeah!!!!!
John: Sami? Would that be okay?
Sami: Oh, sure I suppose. (to the kids) You all mind your pa-pa okay?
Kids: Yes mam!
(and they run along side their grandpa toward the huge carousel)
EJ: Samantha.
Sami: EJ. I’m… Sorry I haven’t been to see you. I had a lot of thinking to do. I am happy to see you are out and about. Been okay?
EJ: I’m feeling fine. Sami, look. I don’t know how you feel about me. If you don’t trust me.. I understand. But please whatever happens between us, I wish you would allow me to visit with the children. I assure you, I promise not to interfere or do try to take them away from you. I just want to be a part of their lives.
Sami: (Stares at EJ for a long moment) You will. You will know them. And about us… That is what I have been thinking about. As long as we take things slow, let me get to know you, the real you. I can’t make any promises. Let’s just see how it goes from here…
EJ: Are you saying…
Sami: I am falling for you… I never thought it would happen. But I want us to be a family. All of us…
EJ: (Pulls her close) That is a dream that has kept me from losing my sanity over the last few weeks. (he draws close for a kiss, she doesn’t back away… they kiss softly, sweetly)
And right on cue, the fireworks display begins, brightening the night sky in colors of red, purple, blue, and green.
Steve: (he sees the exchange as he is nearby eating a corny dog) Sweetness, I just love a happy ending!!! (Kayla has joined him in Salem, Joe is sitting next to her eating cotton candy. Their arms are around each other)
Kayla: So do I, Steve. So do I. Thank God Stefano can no longer control any of our lives. Salem will be so much better off. (They look up and enjoy the firework show...)
(Across the park, a shadowy figure watches the festivities…taking in all in, smiling wickedly. “Ah, dear Salemites, enjoy your fun. But there is a new man in town to take care of some unfinished business.” He walks away, a light shines over him briefly. It is Lawrence Alamain….)
