Marlena is not his mom. Isabella was. Stepmom maybe.

But Isabella died when he was a young infant and Marlena raised him. Sometimes he refers to Marlena as his mother, even though, yes, she is his stepmother.

Heck, John still considers Carrie his daughter from the time he thought he was Roman. Carrie treats John as a 2nd dad, unlike Sami who usually treats him like dirt.

That's my guess. I'm hoping it doesn't lead to more drama and/or Abby being trapped by Robo-Chad, thus separating the couple for a few weeks of bad story.
