Maybe his plan was to have Hope killed, pay off the guy and then take Chase away, but when the hired gun got killed, he had to run away himself or his plan was blown.
If they thought he was dead, they would not come after him and he could slip away, but had to leave Chase behind. He may say when he comes back to save his son, that he was being held against his will in the dungeon. People would believe that since it happened to Rafe.
